Huskies Take Two at RIC

Providence, R.I.—Southern Maine senior shortstop Sam Dexter (Oakland, ME) went 5-for-10 with two doubles, three runs scored, two RBI and eight assists to lead the Huskies to a sweep of Rhode Island College in Little East Conference baseball action at Anchorman Field on Sunday afternoon.

 

The No. 23 Huskies (13-5, 4-0 LEC) took game one by a score of 10-0 in seven innings, before staging a late rally in game two to top the Anchormen (9-13-2, 0-4 LEC) 11-7.

 

Game one started slowly, with neither team scoring in the first inning. The Huskies broke open the game in the second inning, scoring six runs in the frame. Senior left fielder Nick DiBiase (Portland, ME) had an RBI single to get things moving and a run scored from junior designated hitter Paul McDonough (Wells, ME) capped the scoring.

 

The Huskies extended their advantage in the top of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs, which included one off an RBI triple by senior right fielder Jake Glauser (Goffstown, NH) and one on a sacrifice fly by Dibiase. USM struck for two more in the top of the seventh, with DiBiase knocking in another RBI, to help end the game early.

 

USM freshman Henry Curran (South Portland, ME) went 6.1 innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out six in the victory (1-1). RIC junior Jake Murray (Middletown, RI) went 6.1 innings, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits, while striking out five in the loss (1-3).

 

DiBiase led the Huskies in game one, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. RIC junior catcher Tyler Rains (North Kingstown, RI) was able to break up the no-hitter with a single to right center field in the bottom of the seventh.

 

The Anchormen got started quickly in game two, scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding, 5-0, lead. The stanza was highlighted by a three-RBI triple from junior third baseman Scott Linnane (North Kingstown, RI) and an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Brad Douglas (Wakefield, RI).

 

The Huskies got two back in the top of the third, with a single by sophomore designated hitter Tom Budrewicz (Boxford, MA) driving in both runs in the stanza. Dexter would score another run for USM in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit down to two, 5-3, before the Anchormen could respond.

 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, RIC was able to tack on a pair of runs with Douglas recording an RBI and senior shortstop Gian Abbruzzese (North Providence, RI) scoring a run to up the RIC advantage to four, 7-3.

 

Scoring one run in the top of the eighth, the stage was set for the monumental rally of the Huskies in the top of the ninth. Dexter notched an RBI and run scored in the inning, while Glauser, sophomore second baseman Brandon Martins (Manorville, NY) (2), freshman catcher Kip Richard (Kennebunk, ME) (2) and McDonough all recording RBI in the inning as USM scored seven run to comeback from a three-run deficit.

 

RIC starter, junior PJ Watson (Cheshire, CT) went 8+ innings, allowing six runs, while striking out nine. Senior Kory Lawrence (Woonsocket, RI) picked up the loss (1-1). Southern Maine freshman Jake Dexter (Oakland, ME) pitched 3.1 innings of shutout ball, while striking out four, in the victory (1-0).

 

Linnane led the way offensively for the Anchormen on the day, going 2-for-8 with three RBI.  S. Dexter and Glauser led the way for the Huskies, as each notched five hits and three RBI on the day.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Johnson and Wales on Wednesday, April 13 (3:30 p.m.).
