RICHMOND, Ind. – Freshman Walter Talcott pitched his third consecutive complete game win as the Earlham College baseball team defeated Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) 4-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Sadler Stadium on Tuesday.

Talcott allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out ten batters and walking zero in the victory. The Lafayette, Ind., native is now 6-0 this season, placing him in a nine-way tie for third on the program's single season wins list.

The Lions (16-10, 5-8 HCAC) got on the board first with consecutive singles to open the game along with an Earlham error.

Trailing 1-0, the Quakers answered in the second as junior Eric Elkus doubled, advancing senior Brandon Smalling to third base. Sophomore Joe Pipher hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Smalling. After a walk, Elkus scored on a Mount St. Joseph error.

Earlham would add two more runs in the seven on just one hit. Junior Brennan Laird was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Smalling hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Thomas Rea on the next at bat.

The Quakers tallied a season-low four hits in the contest. Laird finished 2-3 while Elkus and junior Matt Barger added one hit each. Earlham drew six walks as a team.

MSJ's Austin Richey took the loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs over six innings.

Earlham stands at 19-6 overall and second place in the HCAC at 9-4. The Quakers will face Defiance in a home series at Sadler Stadium this weekend.
