Two-Run Eighth Inning Propels Franklin Past Rose-Hulman 5-3

Terre Haute, Ind. - The Franklin College baseball team scored two runs with two outs to break an eighth-inning tie during a 5-3 road victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play.

Franklin (10-15, 5-7 HCAC) broke the 3-3 tie after a throwing error on an slow ground ball from senior Drew Kammerer (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon). The play allowed sophomore Jackson Freed (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) and senior Jason Simpkins (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) to score. Simpkins had a key two-out double earlier in the inning to put both runners in scoring position.

Rose-Hulman (16-7, 8-3 HCAC) got a leadoff walk in the eighth inning, but senior reliever Hayden Cleveland (Brownsburg, Ind./Cardinal Ritter) got a double play and pop up to end the threat. The Fightin' Engineers brought the potential game-tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth inning. However, Cleveland got a strikeout to secure the victory.

Franklin scored one run in the second, third, and fourth innings to build a 3-1 lead. Freshman Tanner Nicholson (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) hit a single in second inning to score junior Jacob Troxell (Lapel, Ind./Lapel). One inning later, Troxell gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly. Freshman Jordan Clark (Connersville, Ind./Connersville) hit a run-scoring single in the fourth inning to score sophomore Mitch Schuman (St. Leon, Ind./East Central).

Rose-Hulman scored a run in the sixth inning and later tied the game, 3-3, in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk. Sophomore reliever Aaron Leming (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Memorial) got a bases-loaded double play to end the threat.

Then came Franklin's eighth inning featured two walks, a double, and an error to break the tie.

Clark led Franklin's offensive attack with three hits. Simpkins added two hits and one run scored.

Leming earned his first victory of the season in relief. Senior Justin Brown (Jimtown, Ind./Jimtown) allowed two earned runs in 6.1 innings. Cleveland picked up his first save of the season with two scoreless innings in relief.

Franklin returns to action on Friday, April 15, at 4:13 p.m. when it hosts the opener of a three-game weekend series against Mount St. Joseph University at John P. McDowell Field.
