NEWARK, N.J.  (April 10, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team earned a doubleheader split with New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Rutgers University-Camden on Sunday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
 
The Scarlet Raiders took the opener, 5-3, falling in the second game, 7-2.
 
Rutgers-Newark is now 10-15 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while R-C moves to 12-8 overall and 1-4 in the league.
 
Sophomore starter Mike Zibrin put together his third straight strong start, earning his second win of the season. Zibrin went seven innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out four.Vincent Enea gave up a run in the eighth and senior Chris Nichols tallied his first save of the year with a solid ninth.
 
Senior center fielder Ryan MacFarlane went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored as the hosts banged out 10 hits in the opener. Sophomore Ross Halkias homered and went 2-for-4, and MacFarlane and senior Cameron Dias each had doubles.
 
MacFarlane and Dias each picked up those doubles in the first inning to help R-N to a 2-0 margin, with MacFarlane driving in senior Billy Taylor to make it 3-0 Raiders in the third.
 
Camden scored twice in the sixth, but a MacFarlane single in the seventh allowed sophomore Bran Boulineau to score, and Halkias' homer came to left-center in the eighth inning to give Nichols a 5-3 lead to work with in the ninth.
 
Sophomore Brian Boulineau helped Newark to an early lead with a single to drive in sophomoreAnthony Perconte in the second inning of the second game. Camden answered with a single run in the fifth to tie, and after an RBI groundout from Patrizio put Newark back on top (2-1), two runs in the sixth and four in the eighth for R-C made it 7-2.
 
R-N had five hits in the second game with Taylor, MacFarlane, Perconte, Halkias and Boulineau picking up one apiece. Taylor drew two walks in addition to his hit.
 
Sophomore Dominick Fazio was solid on the mound but took the loss, going six innings. He allowed eight hits, three runs and struck out four.
 
Rutgers-Newark returns to the diamond at Riverfront Stadium Monday at 3:30 p.m. in a makeup of Thursday's game against NJAC foe New Jersey City University. For those unable to make the trip, live stats will be available at www.rutgersnewarkathletics.com.
