Medford, Mass. - Senior Matt Moser hit a walk-off home run in game one and Tufts University scored seven runs in the first inning of game two, as the JUmbos swept a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball doubleheader against the visiting Trinity College Bantams this afternoon at Huskins Field by 5-4 and 11-4 scores.  Along with a 7-4 loss to Tufts yesterday, Trinity falls to 9-14 overall and 4-5 in the division, while the Jumbos improve to 16-4 overall and 5-0 in the NESCAC East.

The Bantams came through with some heroics of their own in the first game. Down to their final out in the top of the seventh inning and trailing 4-2, they tied the score with back-to-back home runs by junior OF Nick Pezzella (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman 1B Johnny Stamatis (Ridgefield, Conn.).  When the game went to the eighth, Tufts reliever R.J. Hall, who had surrendered the home runs, put retired the side in order with two strikeouts before Moser led off the eighth with his home run to left-center.

Tufts had taken an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, and Jumbo starter Speros Varinos did not allow a hit although he walked three in the first four innings. Pezzella got his team's first hit, a two-run home run in the fifth that pulled the visitors within 3-2.  The Jumbos added a run in the sixth frame, an finished the opener with just six hits.  Varinos went six for Tufts allowing three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and four walks, while Hall improved to 4-0 with the win in relief.  Pezzella was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs at the top of the Trinity order. Stamatis finished 2-for-33 with a run and an RBI, while rookie Ian Steckel (Winchester, Mass.) came of the bench to get two hits. Trinity starter Anthony Egeln (POnte Vedra Beach, Fla.) lasted 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned), but senior co-captain Sam Jordan (Sherborn, Mass.) took the loss in relief.

Tufts' seven-run first inning in the second game featured a two-run double by Moser and a three-run homer by Eric Schnepf.  Trinity clawed back to within three runs at 7-4, as Pezzella continued his great day with a double and a run in the first and an RBI single in the second, and senior 3B Daniel Pidgeon (Darien, Conn.) hit a two-run home run to right in the third.  Jumbo sophomore relieve Ian Kinney pitched five scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits with six strikeouts and a walk to earn the win. The Jumbos added two in the fourth and two in the sixth.  Trinity's Pezzella, Stamatis, Pidgeon, sophomore Brendan Pierce (Hingham, Mass.), and freshman Ben Reinisch (Troy, N.Y.) all had two hits in the second game. Junior starter Chris Speer (Westport, Conn.) suffered the pitching loss.
