BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team dropped a non-conference contest on the road, as the Privateers lost to the New York University Violets by the score of 11-3 at MCU Park on Wednesday evening.

Maritime was led on offense by senior Paul Woodburn(Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), who reached base on a single, double and walk while also scoring a run. Sophomores Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson), and Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) as well as freshman Anthony Vieto (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset)all collected RBIs on the night.

Sophomores Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville)both walked twice on the night, while Vieto, DiLeo, and freshman Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) also reached base via walks.

On the hill, sophomore Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic) got the start and struck out four batters, while yielding a pair of earned runs. Rookie Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep)was next in line and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one batter as he took the loss.

Senior Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) tossed 1/3 of an inning, while freshman Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) finished off the seventh inning. Freshman Nick Mullady (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) worked through the final inning of the contest for the Privateers.

After falling behind by a 1-0 score in the bottom of the first inning, Kwiecinski settled down and did not allow a hit through his next two innings of work to send the game to the fourth.

In the top of the fourth, junior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led off the frame with an infield single, followed by Woodburn double to put a pair in scoring position with no outs. Schiavoni tied the game with an RBI groundout, followed by a double down the right field line off the bat of Vieto to give the Privateers the 2-1 lead.

After Vieto moved up to third on a passed ball, DiLeo collected a base knock to drive home Vieto and give the Privateers a 3-1 lead. Maritime later loaded the bases in the inning, but an inning-ending double play short-circuited the Maritime rally.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Violets evened the game at three as a costly error allowed the two runs to cross the plate.

After five innings of work, Kwiecinski was lifted for McQuial, who allowed the eventual game-winning run to score as the Violets took a 4-3 advantage.

New York University added four runs in the seventh, and three more in the eighth off of the final three Privateer pitchers to expand its lead to 11-3.

In the top of the ninth, senior Justin Baierlein (Richmond Hill, N.Y./High School for CTEA) reached on a pinch-hit single and later stole second but it was too late as the Violets hung on for the 11-3 victory.

Maritime (15-9, 4-2 Skyline) will return to league play on Friday, when the team travels to Palisades Park in Palisades Park, New Jersey for a conference doubleheader against Yeshiva beginning at 10 a.m.

New York University (12-13, 2-6 UAA) will head on the road this weekend for a three-game series againt Brandeis in Massachusetts. The Violets and Judges will play a pair on Saturday, followed by a single matchup on Sunday.
