FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Maritime Baseball team closed out its five-game Florida swing on Saturday with a pair of games from the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex. Maritime lost its opening game to Penn State-Behrend, but followed that up with a victory at night against Albright.
Against Penn State-Behrend the Privateers fell behind early, and ended the game with a 15-5 loss. The nightcap saw the Privateers upend the Albright Lions by a 10-2 margin.
In game two, sophomore Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) mastered the Lion offense as he needed just 105 pitches, with 100 of those being fastballs, as he struck out a career-best 11 batters and allowed just one earned run over his nine-inning effort.
The offense recorded a season-best 14 hits as the team's two through seven hitters each collected at least two hits apiece. Sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) had a game-high three hits as he drove in a pair, while classmate Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) drove in a team-best three runs in the effort.
Freshman Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), sophomores Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) and Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), as well as junior Brian McLaughlin(Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) all had multi-hit efforts. Scerra drove in a pair of runs, while McLaughlin, along with DiLeo and junior Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) all picked up an RBI in the win.
After D'Ancona set down the side in order during the first inning, Scerra got the first rally started with a one out single. After moving up to third on a pair of wild pitches, Deddo walked to put runners at the corners. Semler struck out swinging with Deddo on the move, but as the catcher's throw went to second, Scerra stole home to put the team up 1-0.
D'Ancona stranded a pair of runners on base in the second, as the Privateers added another run on an RBI groundout to move ahead by a pair of runs. Maritime added two more runs in the third with a Semler double and Schiavoni base knock put the Privateers ahead by four.
The bats put up another crooked number in the fourth a Scerra picked up a two-run single, with Semler and DiLeo also added run-scoring hits. Albright got one on the board in the top of the fifth as the Privateer defense committed a pair of errors behind D'Ancona.
Albright added a run on a single and a triple in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-2, but once again D'Ancona limited the Lions to just the two hits in the inning. Maritime added one more in the seventh and eighth innings as DiLeo and Schiavoni added RBIs to their ledgers.
In the top of the ninth, D'Ancona struck out two of the final three batters to close out his first complete game of the season as he scattered just six hits over nine innings of work en route to his first win of the year.
Earlier in the day, Maritime faced Penn State-Behrend, and sent sophomore Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) to the hill. After the Privateers went down in order in the top of the first, the Nittany Lions put up nine runs, with the final out coming off a pickoff by Stuart.
Maritime got two runners on in the top of the second, but were unable to bring them home. Behrend added another run in the bottom of the inning to take a double-figure lead.
As the game progressed, Schiavoni picked up an RBI on a groundout to put the Privateers on the board. Maritime added three more runs in the top of the fifth as Semler plated one on a single, before seniorJustin Baierlein (Richmond Hill, N.Y./High School for CTEA) tripled to right centerfield to score two more to make the game 10-4.
Penn State-Behrend added five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to take its largest lead of the game.
Later in the contest, Deddo drove in freshman Chris Scotto (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Freshman Jimmy Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) also walked during the frame for the Privateers.
Stuart took the loss after throwing 83 pitches in the first three innings. Senior Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) came on in relief and tossed two innings and allowed one run on one hit and one walk. Freshman Peter Maes (Brielle, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made his collegiate debut, before freshman Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) did not allow a run over the final three innings of work on 44 pitches.
Maritime (5-2) will return home to New York for its home opener against John Jay this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
