THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team won game two of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, 5-4 against St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on the Reinhart Baseball Field in the opening weekend for Skyline Conference baseball action. In game one, the Privateers rallied back from a five-run deficit but fell short, 8-7.

Senior outfielder Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) blasted two deep home runs on the day, a solo shot in each game. He finished with five hits and two RBIs on the day.

Sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) also had a huge day, totaling three hits, two runs and four RBIs. Deddo came through with a two-run home run down the right field line to give the Privateers a late 4-3 lead in the second game.

Freshman Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) pitched his second complete game win in as many starts in game two, throwing seven innings, allowing eight hits, and four runs. Poliwoda allowed three runs in the top of the first inning but then settled in and blanked the Bears for five straight innings to earn his third win of the season.

In game one, the Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Privateers were able to answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half thanks to a wild pitch, scoring Deddo, and an RBI groundout from junior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) that scored sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) and tied the game at two.

An inning later, the Bears pushed across their third run of the game. Woodburn then tied the game at three with one of his two solo shots in the bottom of the sixth. The next half inning, St. Joseph's racked up five runs on an RBI double and back-to-back home runs to take a 8-3 lead.

Sophomore Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) hit a long two run homer over the right centerfield fence in the bottom of the eight to cut the lead to three.

In the bottom of the ninth, RBIs from Deddo and McLaughlin trimmed the lead to one but the Privateers ultimately were not able to overtake the Bears and lost with a final score of 8-7.

Freshman A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) and sophomore Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) combined for five strikeouts in nine innings of work.

After the Bears scored three first inning runs in game two, senior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-1.

Maritime scored one run on a Deddo sacrifice fly in the third and then Deddo hit his second home run of the year, a two run blast, to give the Privateers a 4-3 lead after five innings.

Woodburn added his second blast of the day to increase their lead to 5-3. The Bears added a home run of their own in the top of the seventh but Poliwoda retired the next three batters to finish off the win.

The Privateers totaled five home runs, 20 hits and 12 runs on the day.

Maritime's next game is Tuesday, April 5, in a non-conference matchup with Fisher on the Reinhart Baseball Field at 7 p.m.
