THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team swept the Purchase Panthers, 6-3 and 12-4, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Baseball Field. With the victory, the Privateers set the modern-day program record for team wins in a season with 19, breaking the record of 17 wins set back during the 2012 season.

Senior outfielder Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) led the offense going 5-for-8 on the day with three doubles, one home run and five RBIs.

Sophomore Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) started the second game on the mound, throwing five innings and only allowed three runs on three hits to go with six strikeouts for his fourth win of the season.

In game one, freshman A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) stranded Purchase base runners in each of the first five innings of the game. In the top of the 1st inning, Ammirati allowed two hits and a hit-by-pitch but was able to get a hitter to fly out for the third out. Ammirati only allowed one run in his 5 1/3 innings of work.

Woodburn got the scoring started with a solo home run down the rightfield line to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead after two innings. Just two innings later, Woodburn drove home another run with an RBI double to left centerfield.

Purchase battled back by scoring a run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch. Freshman Alex Poliwoda(Southold, N.Y./Southold) relieved Ammirati in the top of the sixth inning, entering with bases loaded and one out. Poliwoda struck out the next two batters to end the inning and strand runners on second and third base. The Panthers added two more runs on an RBI single in the eighth inning to tie the game at three.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Maritime answered with four runs on four hits. Senior Justin Baierlein(Richmond Hill, N.Y./High School for CTEA) beat out a bunt single to get the Privateers started. After a hit-by-pitch from freshman Anthony Vieto (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), senior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) singled through the right side to load the bases. Sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) followed with a line-drive sacrifice fly to right field to give Maritime a 4-3 lead. Next, sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) reached on an infield single.

The big blow of the inning came from Woodburn as he roped a bases-loaded single to right field for his third and fourth RBIs of the game. Maritime finished the inning with a 6-3 advantage.

Poliwoda pitched the final 3 2/3 innings to secure the victory for his fourth win of the season.

In game 2, eight different Privateers tallied RBIs in the team's 12-4 win. Maritime pushed across the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout from freshman Jimmy Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park). Monahan then hit a single through the right side to give the Privateers an early 3-0 lead.

Purchase then plated three runs in the top of the third frame on a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly.

The Privateers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of inning, as Woodburn added another RBI with a double to straight away centerfield. Junior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist)followed with an RBI single up the middle. After a walk from Vieto, freshman Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) hit an RBI single. Guerriero and Monahan then racked up back-to-back RBI doubles to open up the game. Deddo added another sacrifice fly and Semler hit an RBI single to leftfield to score Monahan and give the Privateers a 10-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Vieto added his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to plate McLaughlin and increase the Maritime lead to nine. Purchase added their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) pitched the final two innings to finish out the doubleheader.

Maritime will look to keep the momentum going when they take on USMMA this Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m.
