UW-La Crosse Sweeps Doubleheader; Extends Winning Streak to Eight

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over UW-Oshkosh Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park, winning 10-9 in the opener and 10-7 in the nightcap.  UWL improves to 17-6 overall and 8-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Oshkosh falls to 8-13-1 overall and 3-5 in the conference.  The Eagles extended their winning streak to eight with Sunday's victories and have won 12 of their last 13 games overall.

UWL, ranked 12th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll and 13th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Top-30 Poll, earned a four-game series sweep with Sunday's two victories. The Eagles won 7-1 and 15-2 (7 innings) Saturday at Copeland Park.

UWL leads the WIAC by two games with its 8-0 record.  UW-Whitewater is in second-place with a record of 6-2 after splitting a doubleheader at UW-Platteville Sunday.

The opener Sunday featured 12 runs being scored in the final three innings, including five in the ninth.  UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Alex Brown tripled with one out and scored on Ben Morgan's single.  UW-Oshkosh took its first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third with Jack Paulson scoring on Johnny Eagan's sacrifice fly to tie the game and Dylan Ott coming in on Andy Brahier's single to left field to make it 2-1.  It marked the first time in 52 innings (six games) UWL had trailed in a game.

The Titans added to their lead in the top of the fifth on Eagan's two-run single knocking in Noah Polcyn and Ott.  The Eagles cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning as Alex Cordova scored on Justin Anderson's double.  Nate Heili's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth scored Brown to make it 4-3, but UW-Oshkosh scored twice in the top of the seventh for a 6-3 lead.  Polcyn scored on Brahier's single and Paulson came in on Robbie Kleman's single.

UWL took a 7-6 lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh.  Brown's two-run single scored Taylor Kohlwey and Anderson to cut the deficit to 6-5.  Both runners had advanced into scoring position after Carter Hoffman's sacrifice bunt.  Joel Zyhowski gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead with a two-out two-run single scoring pinch-runner Sam Prissel and Morgan.

Morgan's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth scored Hoffman with an unearned run to give UWL a 8-6 lead.

UW-Oshkosh rallied to take the lead in the top of the ninth with three runs all coming with two outs.  Eagan and Brahier singled and Kleman followed with a three-run home run to left field to give the Titans a 9-8 lead.

UWL came right back in the bottom of the ninth to win the game with two runs, both coming with two outs. Cordova and Kohlwey both singled to left field with two outs and Anderson's double down the right field line scored both runners for the Eagles' first nine-inning walk-off win of the season.

Nic Pierick (2-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 3.0 innings in relief.  He allowed five hits and three runs with one strikeout. Jameson Lavery started for the Eagles, going 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs and three walks with three strikeouts.

UWL totaled 19 hits in Sunday's opener as seven of nine starters recorded at least one. Anderson finished 5-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored. The five hits is tied for second in single-game school history. Matt Goebel had a school record six hits versus Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) April 13, 1996. Brown went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in Sunday's first game while Morgan finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run and Heili 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Zyhowski and Kohlwey each had two hits.

Lucas Gregory (0-2) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed six hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk while striking out two.  Ben Messenger started for the Titans, going 6.1 innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs and two walks with seven strikeouts.  UW-Oshkosh had 12 hits with Brahler and Kleman finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored. Brahler finished with two RBI and Kleman four.  Eagan went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run.

In the nightcap, UWL took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Anderson tripled to start the inning and came in on Brown's RBI groundout for the first run of the game.  After a strikeout, Heili singled, stole second and scored on Travis Buxton-Verstegen's single up the middle.  Seth Feldman and Zyhowski followed with singles with Buxton-Verstegen coming in on Zyhowski's hit.  The Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Kohlwey hit a solo home run and Anderson scored on Buxton-Verstegen's second RBI single of the game to make it 5-0.

UW-Oshkosh scored three times in the top of the fourth and once in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-4.  Trent Whitcomb's double in the fourth got the Titans on the board at 5-1 and a two-run double from Taylor Grimm cut the lead to 5-3.  Eagan led-off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to make it 5-4.

UWL took a 8-4 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Zyhowski singled to start the frame, stole second and scored on Cordova's double to right center.  Kohlwey followed with a ground-rule double to knock in Cordova and Heili's single later scored Kohlwey for a 8-4 advantage.

The Titans responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Eagles' lead to 8-7 on Whitcomb's three-run home run to left field.  Eagan and Brahier, who had both walked to start the inning, scored in front of Whitcomb's home run. 

The Eagles quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh with Zyhowski hit-by-pitch and scoring on Cordova's triple to make it 9-7.  Cordova later scored on a balk by UW-Oshkosh for a 10-7 lead.
 
Mason McMahon (1-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings in relief.  He allowed four hits, four runs nad two walks with two strikeouts.  Brock Rude picked up his second save of the year, going 2.2 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.  Travis Stahulak started for the Eagles, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and three walks while recording three strikeouts. 

UWL finished with 17 hits in the nightcap Sunday as eight starters recorded at least one.  Cordova finished 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Kohlwey went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Zyhowski, Anderson, Heili and Buxton-Verstegen each had two hits.  The top-four, Zyhowski, Cordova, Kohlwey and Anderson, finished with 11 hits and five RBI while scoring eight runs (two from each player).

With hits in each game Sunday, Kohlwey extended his hitting streak to 26 games dating back to last season.  Cordova (15 games) and Anderson (13 games) each extended their hitting streaks Sunday.

Jesse Sustachek (1-2) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing 11 hits, five runs and one walk with two strikeouts.  The Titans totaled 10 hits as Kleman went 3-for-5 with a run scored.  Eagan and Whitcomb each had two hits and two runs with Whitcomb finishing with four RBI.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 20 with a non-conference doubleheader at 15th-ranked the University of St. Thomas (Minn.).  Game one starts at 1 p.m.
