The University of Rochester baseball team exploded for a season high 18 runs and pounded out 19 hits, including three home runs in an 18-6 drubbing of Medaille College on Tuesday evening.
Seven members of the Rochester starting lineup had multiple hits, five players scored multiple runs with two players, senior Matt Todd and freshman Aiden Finch setting career highs in runs batted in.
Todd was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, was a triple shy of the cycle, scored three runs and drove in five, three more than his previous career best. Finch was 2-4 and blasted his second grand slam of the season in a huge 10-run second inning for the Yellowjackets (13-12) and ended up with six RBI.
Senior Jake Meyerson and freshman Grant Kilmer also had impressive offensive outbursts, with Kilmer going 3-5 with a double, 4 runs and 2 RBI while Meyerson had a 2-4 day with a home run, and four runs scored.
UR got on the board early, scoring twice in the top of the first inning with RBI singles from Finch and junior Pete Carrier.
In the second, six runs were across home before the Mavericks (7-16) could record an out, including four trotting home on Finch's grand slam. In all, the Yellowjackets scored 10 times in the frame, also highlighted by a Kilmer two-run double.
Medaille scratched runs across in the remaining five innings, but Rochester would add four more in the fourth and the 18th run of the game in the fifth inning. Three of the runs in the fourth inning came off a 3-run homer by Todd, his second career homer, with the other coming against Medaille in the 2014 season.
Rochester pitchers were able to cruise through the game with the big lead after two innings. Junior David Strandberg tossed the opening two innings without allowing a hit. Andrew Klee picked up the win in three innings of relief and led UR pitchers with three strikeouts. Sophomore Michael Lee and junior Sam Steele closed out the game allowing a run each in one inning on the hill.
The Yellowjackets return to action on Thursday with a 7 pm game against another Buffalo area school in D'Youville College, this one coming at home on Towers Field.
