BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 22, 2016) – Despite an outstanding effort, the Sewanee baseball team was outlasted in its opening Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament game, Friday, as the Tigers fell at No. 7 ranked Birmingham-Southern, 4-3, in 11 innings, at Striplin Field.

The nationally ranked Panthers won when Brayden Housel placed a well-executed SAC bunt down that scored A.J. Hunt from third.

Despite the game being dominated by the pitchers overall, both offenses scored early. Sewanee got on the board first when Drew Mancuso drove in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single up the middle.

With Sewanee leading 2-0 after the first inning, the Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. With two outs and two runners on, again it was Mancuso who had the timely hit. The Tiger slugger doubled down the right field line, which scored Jackson Cooper.

However, the Tigers 3-0 lead did not last long as BSC scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third.

An inning later, BSC tied the score when Hunt singled in Sam Roberts.

From there, the pitchers took over. Both teams combined for eight hits and one run the final seven innings.

BSC starter and 2016 SAA Pitcher of the Year Stephen Himic allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out eight in 9.0 innings.

Tiger starter Mancuso was also great. Along with driving in all three Tiger runs, Mancuso struck out seven and gave up only five hits in 6.0 innings. Sewanee reliever J.T. Hintzen also pitched well after he allowed one run and three hits while striking out six in 4.1 innings.

Sewanee will now take on Millsaps at 3:30 p.m., Saturday. The Majors lost to Berry 4-2 on Friday.
