RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team fell to Anderson University 3-2 and 7-5 in a doubleheader played at Sadler Stadium on Saturday.

Game one was a pitcher's duel. Junior Howie Smith and Jake Eaton allowed just two hits through the first seven innings. Anderson broke the game open in the eighth, however, scoring three runs on four hits. The Quakers got two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but two groundouts ended the threat.

Earlham did plate two runs in the ninth on an RBI-single from sophomore Joe Pipher and a double steal, but the tying run was stranded at second base.

Smith took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out six in 7.2 innings of work. Sophomore Matt Mathies allowed just one hit in retiring the final four Raven batters.

Eaton earned the win striking out nine and walking three in seven innings.

The Quakers finished with six hits as a team, Junior Cody Krumlauf led the way with two hits individually. Juniors Matt Barger and Nate Lynch along with senior Devin Spurgon and Pipher each added one hit for Earlham.

In game two, Anderson jumped on top 3-0 in the first two innings, but the Quakers battled back to regain a 4-3 lead with a solo home run from junior Eric Elkus in the second along with a three-run double from senior Brandon Smalling in the third.

The Ravens regained the advantage in the sixth on two hits. Both teams scored a single run in the ninth.

Similar to game one, Earlham finished with six hits as a team. Senior Ethan Bailey was the lone Quaker to record two base knocks, going 2-4 with an RBI and a walk.

Senior Bryce Rainey dropped to 4-3, allowing five earned runs and ten hits while striking out six in seven innings.

Nick Butcher led the Ravens with a 3-4 performance with two RBIs.

Earlham (22-10, 11-7 HCAC) will look to avoid the series sweep with a single game tomorrow (Sunday) at noon.
