Spiers, Trentham Lead #2 R-MC Baseball past #3 W&L 8-3 in ODAC Tourney

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) allowed one earned run over seven innings and senior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) drove in four as the second-ranked and second-seeded Randolph-Macon baseball team defeated third-seeded Washington and Lee 8-3 Friday evening on Day 2 of the 2016 ODAC Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (30-6-1) are the only undefeated team left in the tournament. In Saturday's adjusted schedule, #1 Shenandoah will face the Generals (26-12) in a 9:30 a.m. elimination game. #4 Hampden-Sydney will meet #6 Bridgewater in a 12:30 p.m. elimination game. R-MC will face the Shenandoah-W&L winner at 3:30 p.m.

Spiers (5-4) scattered 10 hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Nic Phelps tossed two scoreless frames with one hit and two punchouts to preserve the victory.

After W&L tallied one in the top of the first, R-MC erupted in the bottom of the frame. Seniors Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) and Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) started the inning with walks and a single by senior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) loaded the bases. Senior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and sophomore Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) drew walks to force in the first two runs for the Yellow Jackets. Trentham ripped a bases-clearing double to left as R-MC took a 5-1 advantage.

After the Generals plated one in the second, the Yellow Jackets added a pair of runs in the fifth. Maiolo had a leadoff double, moved to third on a base hit by Migliorini and scored when Trentham reached on an error. Migliorini also scored on an error as R-MC took a 7-2 lead.

R-MC added to its lead in the sixth as Keeler reached on a one-out error and scored on an error to give the Yellow Jackets an 8-2 lead. W&L scored one in the seventh to make the final 8-3.

Trentham finished with two hits and four RBI. Migliorini reached base four times, going 2 for 2 with two walks, two runs and one RBI.
