Maritime Drops Non-Conference Finale to Merchant Marine

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners, 12-5, in their final non-conference contest of the 2016 campaign.

Sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led the Privateers on offense going 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, and a single up the middle, with one RBI. Deddo now leads the team with four home runs, 24 RBIs and 30 runs on the year.

Senior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) added a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring Deddo and sophomore Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann). Senior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) added two hits and his team-leading 21st stolen base in the loss.

Seven different Maritime pitchers combined for the nine innings. Sophomore Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic) took the ball to start the game and got the first four outs of the contest. Freshman Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) then pitched in relief as he threw 2 2/3 innings, striking out a batter. Freshman A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) pitched the next inning, striking out two. Sophomores Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) and freshman Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) threw one hitless inning each. Freshman Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) pitched the final frame of the contest.

The Mariners came out strong as they scored five runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. Merchant Marine followed that up with three more runs in the third inning and added another in the top of the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

Deddo got the Privateers on the board with an opposite field home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Two innings later, Woodburn laced a single through the right side to bring home two more Privateer runs. Sophomore Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) added a single through the left side to chase Woodburn home.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Privateers were able to push across a run as sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) scored to cut the lead to 10-5. The Mariners added two more runs in the top of the ninth on three singles for the final score of 12-5.

Maritime will go on the road next as they face Mount St. Mary in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 23, starting at 12 p.m.
