Rutgers-Newark Suffers Two One-Run Defeats at Stockton

POMONA, N.J. (April 30, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team suffered a pair of losses at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Stockton University Saturday to close the 2016 season.
 
The Ospreys came back for a 6-5 win in the opener, edging the Scarlet Raiders by a 1-0 final in the nightcap.
 
Rutgers-Newark finishes the year with a record of 15-24 overall and 7-11 in the NJAC. Stockton ends its season at 10-23 overall and 7-11 in the league.
 
The Scarlet Raiders racked up five more conference wins in 2016 than they did in 2015, also eclipsing their overall wins total by three.
 
Stockton 6, Rutgers-Newark 5 – Game 1
The host Ospreys were able to overcome deficits of 4-1 and 5-3 to win the opener by the 6-5 final.
 
Rutgers-Newark erased an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the third as senior Ryan MacFarlanedrove in senior Billy Taylor with a single to left, and junior Josh Cote doubled to give Newark a 2-1 lead.
 
The lead moved to three (4-1) with two more tallies in the fifth. Sophomore catcher Justin Markswalked with the bases loaded, allowing senior Cameron Dias to cross the plate, and sophomore Ross Halkias worked a free pass to push across MacFarlane with his second run of the game and R-N's second run of the inning.
 
Stockton fought within one run with two of its own in the fifth, but the Scarlet Raiders went back on top by two in seventh when sophomore Brian Boulineau walked with the bases loaded.
 
The Ospreys scored one in the seventh, and received the game-winning hit in the eighth as senior Matt Mangarella delivered a two-run single with one out.
 
Sophomore Mike Zibrin went five innings, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs. Sophomore Anthony Hernandez suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work, and junior Vincent Enea did not allow a run in .2 of a frame.
 
Junior Dylan Warburton earned the win (3-4) in game one for the hosts, hurling five strong innings of one-run ball in relief.
 
Seven players picked up hits in the opener for Rutgers-Newark. MacFarlane went 2-for-5 (2B) with an RBI and two runs scored, Cote was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Halkias went 2-for-4.
 
Stockton finished the opener with 16 hits, getting multiple knocks from six different players.
 
Stockton 1, Rutgers-Newark 0 – Game 2
The second contest featured strong pitching from both sides as the two teams each totaled just six hits. Taylor led Newark, going 2-for-4, as senior Gerry Patrizio, Dias, Halkias and Boulineau all had one.
 
Sophomore Dominick Fazio suffered the hard-luck loss, tossing all eight innings and giving up just one unearned run. He struck out five and walked one, scattering six hits. Fazio came on in a big way for Rutgers-Newark at the end of the year, giving up no more than three earned runs in his final four starts. He ends the year allowing just two earned runs in his final 15 innings of work.
 
Sophomore Brandon Perna threw a complete-game shutout for Stockton, walking one, striking out five and scattering six hits.
 
The game was scoreless until the seventh when Stockton tallied the game-winner on a passed ball.
 
Mangarella went 2-for-4 to lead the Osprey offense in the nightcap.
