Kohlwey and Anderson Set School Records in Doubleheader Sweep

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team wrapped up its regular-season home schedule with a doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf College (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon at Copeland Park.  The Eagles improved to 15-2 at home this year with a 7-0 win in Wednesday's opener before coming back to earn a 9-4 victory in game two.  Both games were seven innings.  UWL is 47-10 (.825) since starting to play its home games at Copeland Park in 2014.

UWL, ranked fourth on this week's d3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improved to 28-7 on the season with Wednesday's victories.  The Eagles have won 22 of their last 25 games overall.  St. Olaf (Minn.) drops to 10-25 on the season. UWL now leads the all-time series, 6-4, with St. Olaf (Minn.).

Four pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout win in Wednesday's opener.  Caleb Willems (1-0) earned the win, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit. Mason McMahon started for the Eagles, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing one walk with three strikeouts.  Sawyer Johnson went 1.0 inning recording one strikeout while Nic Pierick pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit.

It is UWL's fifth shutout of the season and third in its last six wins.  The five shutouts are tied for fourth-most in school history.  UWL had a school record eight shutouts in 1973.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first Wednesday as Nate Heili walked to lead-off the game, stole second and advanced to third on an Oles' throwing error.  He then scored on Alex Cordova's sacrifice fly.  Taylor Kohlwey singled in the first inning to tie his own Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record of a hit in 37 consecutive games. He shared the record with UW-Stout's Brad O'Connell.

UWL added to its lead with single tallies in the third and fourth innings.  Heili singled to start the third inning, stole second and scored on Cordova's single for a 2-0 lead.  In the fourth, Alex Brown walked to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on Michael Knutson's groundout.  Brown then scored on Alex Robson's single for a 3-0 advantage.

The Eagles scored four runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.  Carter Hoffman had a two-run double scoring Cordova and Kohlwey while Brown's RBI double knocked in Hoffman.  Brown later scored on an RBI groundout from Robson. 

UWL totaled 11 hits in the opener with Kohlwey, Hoffman and Robson each finishing with two hits.  Cordova, Hoffman and Robson each had two RBI while Heili and Brown scored twice.

Luke Dahl (1-4) took the loss for St. Olaf (Minn.), pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs and five walks while striking out two.  The Oles were held without a hit until Sam Stuckmayer's single to start the top of the fifth.  Nate Bauer added St. Olaf's (Minn.) only other hit with a single in the sixth.

UWL rallied in the nightcap to earn its 9-4 victory.  The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Heili (single, stolen base), Cordova (walk) and Kohlwey (single) reaching to start the game and load the bases.  Anderson followed with an RBI groundout to score Heili.

Kohlwey's single extended his hitting streak to a WIAC record 38-games. The 38-game hitting streak is tied for 10th-longest in NCAA Division III history and the longest in the country since 2011.  Kohlwey has recorded a hit in 56 of his last 59 games overall and in 126 of 141 career games with an official at-bat.

Anderson's RBI in the bottom of the first broke the single-season school record of 53 set by Chester Janke in 2002.

St. Olaf (Minn.) scored four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead.  The Oles scored four runs on one hit as the team drew four bases-loaded walks.  The Eagles cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of third as Cordova doubled and later scored on Anderson's team-leading seventh home run of the season.  UWL took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. Heili tied the game with a lead-off home run.  Cordova singled and advanced to second on St. Olaf (Minn.) throwing error.  He moved to third on Kohlwey's fly-out and scored on Anderson's RBI double.  UWL tallied four times on three hits in the bottom of the sixth.  Kohlwey and Anderson delivered RBI singles while Cordova and Kohlwey later scored on an Oles' fielding error.

Four UWL pitchers combined to held St. Olaf (Minn.) to four hits in the nightcap.  Logan Mallek (2-0) earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing two hits while striking out five.  Brock Rude started for the Eagles, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout.  Lukas Kolasch went 0.2 of an inning, allowing one hit, four runs and five walks while recording two strikeouts.  Jake Stern pitched 1.0 inning.

The Eagles finished with 12 hits in the nightcap as Cordova and Anderson each had three.  Cordova scored three times while Anderson finished with five RBI to give him a school record 58 for the season.  Heili and Kohlwey each had two hits in Wednesday's nightcap with Heili scoring three runs. The top-four in UWL's line-up of Heili, Cordova, Kohlwey and Anderson went a combined 10-for-14 with eight runs and seven RBI. 

Cordova needs one run and Kohlwey five to break the single-season school record of 57 held by Vinnie Rottino (2002) and Kohlwey (2014).

Jake Ossel (0-4) suffered the loss for St. Olaf (Minn.) in Wednesday's nightcap.  He went 3.0 innings in relief, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk with two strikeouts.  Four different players had a hit for the Oles.
