STANDISH, Maine – Sophomore Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.) scored once on three hits as the Nichols College baseball team fell 5-4 to Saint Joseph's College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.

Junior Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Roy (Middletown, Conn.) each collected a pair of hits while Roy scored two runs and drove in another. Three other Bison collected hits including sophomores Ross Caswell (Randolph, Vt.) and Greg Eng (Middletown, R.I.) as well as senior Benjamin Harrow (North Reading, Mass.).

The Monks were paced by junior Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) who went 3-for4 on the game and freshman Noah McDaniel (Eliot, Maine) who drove in a pair of runs. Junior Scott Betts (Peabody, Mass.) scored a pair of runs including the eventual game-winner on a passed ball in the sixth inning.

Freshman Tyler Crane (East Amherst, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and striking out a pair. Sophomore Vincent Amato (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was in line for the win after throwing five strong innings. He allowed three runs (one earned) on just six hits while striking out two.

The Monks received a solid effort out of the bullpen from junior Nick Malatesta (Wrentham, Mass.). Malatesta fired the final 3.2 innings allowing no runs on just two hits while walking one and striking out one to earn his fifth win of the year.

After both teams remained scoreless through four innings, the Bison struck first in the fifth when junior Tim Ford (Stafford Springs, Conn.) singled into right centerfield bringing home Roy.

The Monks quickly answered back with three runs in their half of the inning. McDaniel laced a double to left center to bring home Betts and sophomore Jacob White (Salem, N.H.) and would score two batters later on a double by graduate student Nic Lops (South Portland, Maine) to make the score 3-1.

Nichols scratched across three runs of their own in the sixth inning. Cook scored on a single up the middle by Roy and then Hardy scored on a single through the left side of the infield from Harrow. Sophomore Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.) plated Roy on a sac-bunt to put the Bison in the lead, 4-3.

Saint Joseph's quickly answered right back again with two runs in their half of the sixth to give them the lead for good.
