TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team left 11 runners on bases in a 4-2 loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on the second day of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament on Friday.

Rose-Hulman advances to the tournament championship on Saturday. Earlham will face the winner of Manchester University and Transylvania University in an elimination game at 7 p.m. this evening.

Earlham left the bases loaded in the first and the fifth innings, but failed to score either time. The Fightin' Engineers scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead.

The Quakers finally broke through in the seventh inning as senior Ethan Bailey drove in two runs with his single to left field.

Junior Howie Smith did not allow a baserunner from the sixth inning on, allowing Earlham a chance to tie the game.

That chance came in the ninth inning when senior Thomas Rea, who missed the last three weeks due to injury, opened the frame with a single to left center field. Sophomore Kendal Baker pinch ran for Rea and reached second base on a passed ball. A popup and two groundouts that followed ended Earlham's threat.

Smith took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits and striking out three in eight innings of work.

Earlham totaled nine hits as a team including two from junior Nate Lynch and Bailey.

Rose-Hulman finished with 11 hits with nine of them being singles.

The Quakers (28-13) return to action at 7 p.m. this evening.
