Baseball Downs Ithaca To Force Winner-Take-All

The St. John Fisher College baseball team forced a winner-take-all game tomorrow after defeating Ithaca College, 5-2, in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Round late this afternoon at Dugan Yard. Tomorrow's finale will take place at 10 a.m. to crown the Empire 8 Champion.

Fisher is now 34-10 overall on the season, while the Bombers have dropped to 26-15. 

Cardinal's starting pitcher Terry Engels threw eight impressive innings to claim his sixth win of the season. The senior allowed three hits and two runs, while fanning three. 

Fisher reliever Loukas Brigham set a single-season record in saves, earning his eighth save of the season.

The scoring started for the Cardinals in the bottom of the third when they took a 1-0 lead on two hits. Jack Trotman singled to shortstop on the first pitch he saw to start the things off. He later moved himself into scoring position after he stole second and then came around to score on Nate Roethel's single through the right side.

In the bottom of the fourth, Fisher increased its lead again as three runs crossed the plate. Malcolm Kelsey reached on an error by the third baseman then stole second. He later moved to third on junior Evan Ryan singled to center with one out. Both runners came around to score on Cody Wiktroski triple over the centerfielder's head. He later scored off Trotman's sacrifice fly left to make it a 4-0 game.

Ithaca cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth as two runs scored on a hit by pitch, two fielder's choices, an error and a sacrifice fly. 

Fisher added its fifth and final run of the contest in its half of the eighth. Ryan singled to center on the second pitch of his at-bat and later came around to score on Wiktorski's double to center.

Wiktorski paced all Cardinal hitters for the game as he went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double, three RBIs and a run scored.

Ryan and Trotman combined for four hits, three runs scored, an RBI and a double for Fisher.
