FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (February 18, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team suffered a tough 6-5 loss on Saturday to Frostburg State University in the Fayetteville Tournament.
 
A day after earning a thrilling comeback win over Stevenson University, the Scarlet Raiders took a tough loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season. Rutgers-Newark will look to get back into the win column Sunday against Penn State University-Abington. First pitch is slated for an early 9 a.m.
 
Rutgers-Newark was able to build a 5-0 lead after the top half of the seventh inning, scoring a single run in the third, two more in the fifth and two in the seventh.
 
In the third, junior Anthony Perconte doubled and came around to score on a double from junior Brian Boulineau, and in the fifth Boulineau struck again with a two-run double to center field that brought in sophomore Ryan Zucker and freshman JC Ball. Ball recorded his first career hit earlier in the inning and Zucker was hit by a pitch.
 
Perconte and Boulineau began the two-run seventh with singles, and after a single from junior Adam Tricarico loaded the bases, walks to junior Justin Marks and freshman Colin Powers made the score 5-0 in favor of the Scarlet Raiders.
 
Frostburg State (1-0) was able to push across a single run in the bottom of the seventh and four runs on three hits and two errors in the eighth to tie the game. Then, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, junior Colton Sivic delivered a walk-off solo homer to lift his team to the win.
 
Junior Dominick Fazio tossed a strong five innings in the start for Rutgers-Newark, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks. Fazio struck out a pair and recorded 11 fly-ball outs. Junior Yanni Vayas was charged with five runs (just one earned) on four hits in 2.2 innings, and senior Vincent Enea suffered the loss in two thirds of an inning
 
Rutgers-Newark racked up nine hits in the game. Boulineau led the way, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Perconte went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Tricarico, Marks, senior Josh Cote and Ball all picked up one hit apiece.
 
Frostburg received three scoreless innings of relief from junior Mike Takovich and junior Tyler Hoffman, and Hoffman was credited with the win.
