Tigers Beat Caltech, Improve to 5-2

LOS ANGELES — Jack Brancheau homered, Devon DeRaad had a pair of doubles and the Occidental baseball team took Game 1 from Caltech on Friday, 10-6 in the first of a three-game series this weekend.

DeRaad, a First Team All-American in 2016, went 2 for 5 with a RBI and a run scored, to go along with his doubles.

Brancheau hit a solo shot in the eighth inning. 

Oxy outfielder Bryan Smith, who's been red hot all season, had another big day, going 2 for 3 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. The sophomore is hitting .404 with three home runs and 13 RBIs so far this season.

Michael Netzel went 2 for 5 with a double, a RBI and a run scored for the Tigers.

Josh Cohen struck out five batters and gave up just one hit in two solid innings of relief work for Oxy, earning the victory.

Tim Menninger was charged with the loss for Caltech.

Chris McCarren had an outstanding day for the Beavers, going 5 for 5 from the plate.

Oxy scored the first five runs of the game and then the Beavers rallied for six in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. The Tigers quickly answered with five unanswered runs to put the game away in the following two innings.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in SCIAC play.

Caltech falls to 2-12 and 0-7.

Next Game: The Tigers and the Beavers play a doubleheader at Oxy on Saturday. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 11 a.m.
