ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and sophomore Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) both homered as the ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team fell 7-5 to Rowan Saturday afternoon on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
The Yellow Jackets (7-3) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. Freshman Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) and Butler drew consecutive walks before Migliorini belted a home run to right, his second of the season, to give R-MC a 3-0 lead.
Butler smacked a solo homer with two away in the second as the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 4-0. It was also his second long ball of the season.
The Profs (2-0) sent just 12 batters to the plate over the first four innings before erupting for six in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a leadoff single to short, moved to third on an error and scored on a double play as R-MC pulled within two at 7-5.
The Yellow Jackets put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Duphorn was hit by a pitch, while Butler and junior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) followed with singles to load the bases. Migliorini hit a grounder to second and on the toss to second base, Spiers appeared to slide straight into the bag. The base umpire called interference on Spiers, calling Migliorini out at first and forcing Duphorn and Butler to return to third and second. A groundout ended the threat and the ballgame.
Butler and Migliorini both finished with two hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon and Rowan conclude their weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
