SEWANEE, Tennessee – The Earlham College baseball team fell to the University of the South (Sewanee) 13-9 in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday.
The Quakers, who lost the first two games on Saturday, scored first for the first time in the series in the top of the third inning. Junior Kendal Baker opened the frame with a bunt single, and senior Matt Barger followed with a double through the left side, advancing Baker to third. Two groundouts that followed scored two runs for Earlham.
The Tigers answered immediately in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead. After a scoreless top of the fourth, Sewanee's Beau Allen provided an RBI-double, putting the hosts up 4-2 after four.
Neither team had a baserunner in the fifth inning, but the Earlham bats caught fire in the sixth. Three of the first four Quakers reached base, and freshman Danny Dopp singled to right center to get the scoring started. Freshman Isaiah Shake doubled home senior Cody Krumlauf on the following at bat to tie the game 4-4, and sophomore Addison Robertson then gave Earlham a 5-4 edge with an RBI-groundout. The Quakers would score two more runs on a single from Barger and a Tiger error. In total, 10 Quakers came to bat.
Leading 8-4, Earlham could not hold the lead as the Tigers pounced for five runs in the bottom of the sixth and four in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 13-9, the Quakers plated a run in the top of the ninth inning on a single from Dopp, but two strikeouts ended the threat.
Senior Dalton Carter took the loss for the Quakers, allowing two earned runs in two thirds of an inning pitched. Freshman Colin Greve started the contest, pitching 3.2 innings while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
Daniel McDonnell earned the win for Sewanee in relief, pitching 3.2 innings while allowing one earned run.
The Quakers finished with 12 hits in the contest including two from Barger, Krumlauf, Dopp, and Baker. The Tigers tallied 14 hits while both teams had three errors.
Earlham (0-3) looks for its first win of the season when it hosts Olivet College (Michigan) on Wednesday. First pitch from Sadler Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
