Wheaton (Ill.) rolls to 6-1 win over Heidelberg

Punta Gorda, Fla. - The Thunder baseball team earned its second consecutive victory this afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Heidelberg. With the victory, the Thunder avenges a 2-1 loss to the Student Princes on Saturday and improves to 4-3 on the season. Heidelberg falls to 4-2. Wheaton will resume its spring trip on Friday with a doubleheader against Moravian and Bluffton.

Wheaton scored six runs on 10 hits and committed three errors. Heidelberg was held to one run on five hits. In his first career start, Kyle Ferraro allowed just one run in four innings of work with three strikeouts. Ty Hoeksema earned the victory with three one-hit innings of relief work. Josiah Longenecker and Nick Johnson each contributed a scoreless inning.

Both teams pushed a run across in the second inning with Wheaton scoring on a Ben Brittain sacrifice fly that plated Johnny Peltz. Heidelberg countered in the home half of the inning with a two-out walk and a double.

Wheaton took the lead with one run in the top of the third inning when John McKenna led off with a walk and moved first to third on a Kyle Trivits single on a hit and run. Nick Mailman followed with an infield single to plate McKenna. Heidelberg threatened to tie the game in the home half of the fourth inning, putting runners on second and third with one out but Ferraro stepped up with a strikeout and induced a groundout to end the inning.

Wheaton added to its lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning by loading the bases with no outs. Brett Albaugh plated the first run on a fielder's choice to drive in Trivits and Mailman scored on a Peltz RBI single.

A seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Albaugh to plate Mailman made it 5-1 and Wheaton added its final run in the top of the ninth inning when Mailman scored on an Albaugh single.

Albaugh led the Thunder offense with three runs driven in. Mailman tallied a game-high three hits with two runs scored, one run driven in and a stolen base. Peltz recorded two hits with a run scored and a run driven in.
