The Oglethorpe baseball team faced a tough matchup against No. 1 Emory Wednesday afternoon at the Eagles' campus in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, and couldn't overcome an Emory scoring barrage in a 17-1 defeat. The Stormy Petrels gave up 21 hits on the afternoon while managing just 7 themselves, and the result dropped the team to 6-6 on the season. 

The Eagles scored 8 runs in the fourth inning off Oglethorpe pitching after taking a 3-0 lead into that frame. They then gave up 4 more runs in the fifth, making the score 15-0 at that point. Top-ranked Emory was able to cruise home from there, adding a couple more in the seventh.

The Petrels finally got a run back in the ninth inning, breaking up the shutout. Junior right fielder Henry Edwards walked to lead off the inning and senior Morgan Blake followed with a pinch-hit single. Junior first baseman Dee Kelly followed with another single, scoring Edwards and giving the Petrels their only run of the contest.

Senior right-hander Ryan Brennan got the start and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits over 3 innings, suffering the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. Both freshman right-hander Chris Woodward and senior right-hander James Owen went an inning without allowing a a run in relief.

Both teams got 26 players into the game apiece for a total of 52 players seeing action at one point or another. 

The schedule doesn't get much easier for the Petrels, as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, over the weekend to take on No. 4 Birmingham-Southern in a 3-game set. The games are subject to movement due to weather, but as currently scheduled, the two teams will face off Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern and Saturday at 2 p.m., the latter comprising a doubleheader.
