No. 5 UW-Whitewater Splits Against Concordia-Moorhead

The No. 5 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team posted a 1-1 record in a pair of one-run games Friday against Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) in non-conference play at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

The Warhawks (3-1 overall) fell 2-1 in the opener before taking Game 2 by a 3-2 score.

In the nightcap, junior right fielder Brett Krause knocked a two-out, two-run single to center to put UW-Whitewater ahead for good.

Junior pitcher Heath Renz went the distance on the mound for his first win of the season. The right-hander scattered eight hits and allowed only two unearned runs while striking out four in the effort.

After the Cobbers (5-6) plated a run in the top half of the first, the Warhawks responded in the bottom half with a run on a double to center by sophomore third baseman Cal Aldridge to tie the contest.

Renz pitched around a two-on, no-out jam in the third inning and left one runner on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Concordia Moorhead took the lead in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Krause led the offense with two hits, while Aldridge, senior shortstop Jordan Kuczynski and junior centerfielder Daytona Bryden tallied one hit apiece.

In Game 1, the Cobbers plated a run with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a close play at the plate to earn a walk-off victory.

Senior lefty Ankur Shah tossed six innings of one-run ball, surrendering only four hits while striking out six. Sophomore right-hander Michael Kaska took the loss.

The Warhawks totaled five hits in the affair, and Krause plated the team's lone run with an RBI groundout in the top of the second.

UW-Whitewater begins a seven-day, six-game trip to Central Florida next week Thursday against William Paterson (N.J.) at 8:30 a.m. Central Time.
