No. 4 Panthers Sweep SAA Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 4 Birmingham-Southern baseball team swept Oglethorpe University 7-4 and 5-2 to open Southern Athletic Association play 2-0 this season.  The Panthers' bullpen struck out 24 batters and gave up just six earned runs over the two games to help the team improve to 13-3 overall.

 

Stephen Himic (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS) struck out a career-high 12 batters en route to his complete game win in the night cap.  After giving up a solo shot to start the fourth, Himic didn't allow another hit and even struck out six batters straight from the end of the fourth through the sixth.  Ryan Gaines (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody HS) earned the opening win.

 

David Scott (Atlanta, Ga./Woodward Academy) led the offense.  He went 5-for-8 with two runs and an RBI to finish with a .625 hitting percentage on the day.

 

The series concludes Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
