AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team began its 10-game Spring Break trip by winning both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Medaille College, 5-1 and 9-1, during the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park. The Mavericks, who wrapped up their Spring Break trip, moved to 2-7. Both of Saturday's games were seven-inning affairs.
Plattsburgh State, which is 2-0 for the first time since 2005, received a complete-game pitching effort and two base hits by sophomore Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches/Hofstra) in the opening game. Bryant, who was making his Plattsburgh State debut, allowed just one run on seven hits while striking out three batters. Freshman Justin Adams (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) went 2-for-4 for his first collegiate hits while also scoring a run. Junior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East/Suffolk County CC) and freshmen Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) and Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) each had RBI singles, with Deland adding a stolen base, Follmer scoring twice and stealing a base and Bryant adding a run. Freshman Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan/Joto) had a hit and a run scored.
Medaille junior Jared McStine went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch and sophomore Connor Priester went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Shawn Filas provided an RBI single, while seniors Daniel Luppens and Franky Vazquez both had singles. Sophomore Peter Grunzweig yielded three runs – one earned – on five hits while striking out two batters in five innings for the loss. Classmate Andrew Parks surrendered two unearned runs on three hits in two frames.
The Mavericks strung together three one-out singles in the bottom of the first inning, including Filas' RBI base knock to score Priester for an early 1-0 lead. Plattsburgh State logged just one hit over the next three innings before busting out for three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Mori started off with a single and then came home two batters later after back-to-back bunts and a throwing error by the Mavericks. Stephen Bryant chipped in a two-out RBI single and later touched home on a wild pitch.
Medaille stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the fifth before the Cardinals struck for two more runs in the next half inning. Deland contributed a two-out RBI single and Follmer scored on a throwing error by the catcher as the Cardinals jumped out to a 5-1 score. Patrick Bryant induced three groundouts in the sixth and saw two runners reach in the seventh before forcing a game-ending flyout.
Sophomore Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) carried a no hitter into the sixth inning before yielding three hits in that frame in the eventual win in game two. Fox stuck out four batters and did not allow an earned run. Offensively for the Cardinals, Follmer went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while junior Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East/Caldwell) went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, one double and one stolen base. Stephen Bryant went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, one walk and two runs scored, while Patrick Bryant had an RBI single, one walk, one stolen base and one run scored. Deland went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Mori tossed a scoreless seventh frame with two strikeouts.
Filas, McStine and Priester all singled and freshman Greg Power walked. Freshman Tom Lunghino was tagged for the loss after surrendering eight runs – five earned – on nine hits in 5.2 innings.
The Cardinals plated four first-inning runs. Stephen Bryant's RBI double brought home Deland and Clark ripped a two-run single before later scoring on an error. Plattsburgh State scored once in both the second and fourth innings to lead, 6-1. Medaille, which had just one base runner in the first five innings, got on the board with one run on three hits in the sixth. Priester had the first of three straight two-out singles, with the lone run coming on his base knock. Clark came up with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and clubbed a bases-clearing double to build Plattsburgh State's lead to 9-1. Mori entered in relief in the seventh and fanned the final two batters of the game.
