Haag, Caladie Lead Scranton Past Lakeland, 7-3, To Start Spring Trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman designated hitter Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and junior righty Anthony Caladie (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) pitched into the seventh inning to lead The University of Scranton baseball team to a 7-3 win over Lakeland University to open the team's spring break trip.

The Royals (4-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an inning and 3-0 after three frames. It was 4-0 after six before Lakeland (3-6) cut Scranton's lead to 4-3 in the top of the seventh. But Scranton answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the eighth for some breathing room.

Haag had RBI doubles in both the first and third innings and an RBI single in the seventh. Senior catcher Dan Hansen (Helena, Mont./Helena) and junior second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) added RBI singles in the victory.

Caladie worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out four to earn his first win of the season. Freshman righty Casey Jacobson (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings while striking out four to earn his first career save.

Schneider finished with two hits, an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Junior outfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) singled twice and scored a run, senior shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) singled and scored twice, and senior outfielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) singled twice and scored a run.

The Royals will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Gallaudet at noon in Fort Myers, Fla.
