AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The No. 17 Oswego State baseball team defeated the Montclair State University Red Hawks in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. With the Spring Break trip-opening wins, the Lakers improve to 8-2 on the year, while Montclair falls to 3-8.

Game One: Oswego 9, Montclair State 4 (7 inn.)

Oswego opened the game with a tally in the first inning after Kevin Hylas reached base on an error out of the lead-off spot. The junior used smart base running following a groundout and proceeded to score on a John Barnes' RBI single.

The Lakers continued to apply pressure throughout the early innings, scoring a run in the second, third and fourth innings each. Kyle Simmons, Barnes and Hylas all provided RBI base hits in the frames, respectively.

Following two scoreless innings, Oswego broke open the game in the final inning of regulation. The game's visiting team crossed the plate five times to effectively put away the contest. The nationally-ranked Laker squad took advantage of two errors and five hits to gain a 9-3 advantage. Robert DonnellyLukas OlssonJosh HoaglandZach Whelan and Hylas collected the hits.

On the mound, Mitchell Cavanagh improved to 3-0 on the year. The junior threw a complete game, allowing two earned and striking out eight batters.

Game Two: Oswego 6, Montclair State 0 (7 inn.)

Through the first two innings of the second contest, both teams were kept off the board as pitching dominated. Tim Cronin led the Lakers on the bump, recording a complete-game shutout. The senior allowed no runs on four hits and sat down one via the strikeout.

Simmons and Hamilton led the Laker rallies twice on Saturday. Starting in the third, Simmons singled before a fielding error moved him to second and brought a run home. Later in the inning, Hamilton stepped to the plate with Simmons on second and Collin Thompson on third and ripped a double down the left-field line, which brought both runners home.

In the fifth, Simmons once again got on base with a double to the gap. Hamilton followed this up with a ground-rule double to drive in his fellow Laker. In the next at-bat, Barnes rounded off the scoring with a double of his own -- this one to right field -- to drive in Hamilton.

Oswego returns to action for a single game on Sunday morning, as it takes on Eastern Connecticut State University at 9:30 a.m. at Chain of Lakes Park (Field #4).
