FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College baseball team received another stellar pitching performance in winning their final game of their annual spring trip. The Eagles knocked off fellow Wisconsin program UW-Stout 6-1 behind a complete game, seven-hit victory from Blake Bieri. With the win, the Eagles are off to their best start to a season since 2004.

Edgewood College (7-2) left the bases loaded in the first inning, but broke through with three runs in both the second and third innings. In the second, Jeff Tucker's ringing triple to right-center field scored Bryan Sternig and Paul Cappetta for a 2-0 lead. Alex Fowler then brought Tucker home with a squeeze bunt.

In the third, Nick LehnerGarrett Bogucki and Tim Nunn opened the inning with three straight singles to push the Eagles lead to 4-0. Then Brodie Engel smacked a single to right field for a 6-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Bieri was cruising along, allowing just four hits through the first seven innings. UW-Stout (3-10) ruined Bieri's shutout bid with a run in the eighth, but the senior from Waunakee set down the Blue Devils in order in the ninth to close the game.

Bieri improved to 2-0 on the season with two complete games in two starts. He had five strikeouts and allowed just seven hits. The run allowed by Bieri was the only one he's surrendered in his last 16 innings.

Every batter in the Eagles lineup had a hit with the heart of the order, Lehner, Bogucki and Nunn each accounting for two hits. Tucker's triple was the Eagles' only extra base hit, with Fowler and Sternig recording stolen bases.

At 7-2, the Eagles have their best record through nine games since the 2004 team opened the season 8-1. Edgewood College will take the long drive back to Wisconsin and then prepare for three games next weekend, hosted by Wheaton College (Ill.). The Eagles will play Northland College and Bethel University (Minn.) on Friday, before challenging the host Thunder on Saturday.
