Pitching Carries Marlins to 9-4 Victory

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team ended a three-game losing streak, bouncing back with a 9-4 victory at Mary Washington on Monday.

The Marlins scored early in the game as Brandon Kussmaul singled to right field to lead off the contest, scoring on Deon Hammond's double to left.

The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning while Nick Bay controlled the Eagle lineup.

The Marlins scored four insurance runs and extended their lead to 5-0. Hammond singled to center field, followed by back-to-back walks to Justin Erby and Randy Neisz, loading the bases for Taylor Erby. He flew out to center to score Hammond. Corey King doubled to right center scoring Justin Erby and Neisz. Rounding up the four-run inning was a C.J. Lindsay single to left field that scored King.

The Marlins went up 7-0 in the seventh inning when Neisz crushed a home run to center field that scored Justin Erby.

Mary Washington rallied for four runs against the Marlin bullpen, but VWC was able to hold on for the victory.

Justin Erby went 2-for-3 with three runs while King went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Nick Bay (2-1) allowed just one earned run on one hit in six innings of work, walking five and striking out eight.

Virginia Wesleyan (7-9) hosts Greensboro College (17-8) on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. first pitch scheduled.
