SALEM, Va. – No. 1 Shenandoah University took to the road Saturday afternoon to sweep No. 20 Roanoke in an ODAC baseball doubleheader.

The Hornets (18-1, 4-1 ODAC) were 3-1 winners in game one before completing the sweep with a 9-2 victory in the nightcap over Roanoke (17-7, 3-4).

SU got a complete game performance from freshman Gerard DePhillips in the opener as the right-hander went the distance for the third consecutive start.

Shenandoah scored all of the runs it would need in the top of the first inning as Roanoke starting pitcher John Ruhlman (1-2) walked the first three batters to bring All-America designated hitter Jake Loew up with the bases loaded and no outs.

Loew grounded to second, bringing in Tristan Baker with the first run of the game.

Nick Goode, who finished the game 3-for-3, followed with a single to left center to score Abel Arocho with what proved to be the game-winning run.

In the second, catcher Dan Cameron laced a one-double to left to plate Arocho, who had reached base one batter earlier on a single to center.

Roanoke scored its lone run on leadoff walk, a single and a sacrifice fly to right.

DePhillips (5-0) struck out three and walked four in throwing his third consecutive complete game. He had 1-2-3 innings in the second and eighth before working through a two-on, two-out jam in the ninth.

SU scored two runs in the first and second innings of the nightcap to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Junior Colin Morse (4-0) scattered nine hits and two walks in 8.0 innings, allowing two runs in the process, to pick up the win. Southpaw Matt Burns worked a scoreless ninth to finish off the sweep.

Shenandoah banged out 16 hits in the nightcap, including at least one by all nine starters.

Loew and Goode both had three hits with Goode and Arocho driving in two runs each.

Arocho's two RBI, on a single to left center in the second, represented the game-winner.

SU is back in action on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. ODAC game at Eastern Mennonite.
