Gwynedd Mercy and #18 Alvernia Battle to a Tie

READING, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball Team tied nationally-ranked Alvernia on Wednesday afternoon, 10-10, after the game was called due to darkness after the 10th inning.

Four Griffins collected a pair of hits on the day. Ryan Keen drove in a pair of runs while also scoring a run. Dave Tatoian extended his hitting streak to 12 games while driving in a run and scoring a pair. Shaughn Wright drove in a run, scored a run, and stole a pair of bases while Justin Curtin added a run as well.

GMercyU (9-5-1) jumped out early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning on RBIs from Keen, Tatoian and Josh Lopez. Alvernia would answer with one in the bottom of the frame.

The Crusaders (14-2-1), ranked #18, would take a 4-3 lead after three full innings. The Griffins would tie the game 4-4 in the fourth inning on another Keen RBI to score Nick Mulvey.

GMercyU scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead. Iziah Trimble would highlight the frame with his bases loaded clearing double to score Tatoian, Derek Whitfield and Nick Mulvey. Wright would add another run in the sixth with an RBI to plate Curtin for a 9-4 edge.

Alvernia would respond with a run in the bottom of seventh. The Griffins were able to work themselves out of a bases loaded no-out situation.

Gwynedd would get the run back in the top of the eighth on a Tommy Nardini sacrifice fly RBI to plate Wright.

However in the bottom of the eighth, Alvernia scored five runs on five hits to tie the game up at 10-10.

The Griffins had a runner in scoring position in the top of the 10th but were unable to bring him home. Alvernia threatened the bottom of the ninth and tenth innings, getting a runner in scoring position but reliever Sachael Sciarretta held them off the scoreboard.

Starter Jared Gorman worked six innings to earn the no-decision.

Gwynedd will return back to action over the weekend in Colonial States Athletic Conference action traveling to Cairn on Saturday for a 2 p.m. nine-inning game and hosting the Highlanders on Sunday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
