BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott baseball team split its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with Curry College on Monday evening at North Field. Endicott fell to Curry, 3-2 (8 inn.), in game one but bounced back in the nightcap with a 2-0 victory to earn the split.
GAME ONE: Curry 3, Endicott 2 (8 inn.)
Curry junior right-hander David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) picked up the win (1-2) on seven innings pitched, five hits, two runs (both earned), three walks, and four strikeouts. Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) notched his first save of the season with a clean eighth inning, which included one strikeout.
Nick Quattro (Canton, Conn.) took the loss (1-1) on two innings of work, two hits, one run (earned), three free passes, and four punchouts. Kevin Gould (Rollinsford, N.H.) was dealt the no-decision via six innings pitched, four hits, two runs (both earned), two walks, and four strikeouts.
Tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, Curry scratched across the game's eventual game-winning run on a walk, sacrifice bunt, back-to-back walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Fogarty then retired Endicott in order on a pair of fly outs and a strikeout looking to lock up the game one victory.
Endicott forced extra innings in the sixth as Michael Casciano (Somers, Conn.) notched a game-tying single to center that scored Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) from third base with two outs.
GAME TWO: Endicott 2, Curry 0
The Gulls responded in game two behind shutdown pitching efforts from Joseph Oriola (Sandwich, Mass.) and Colby Morris (Newburyport, Mass.). Oriola spun five scoreless innings for his first collegiate win – which included four strikeouts – while Morris locked down his first save of the year on two hitless frames.
Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) took the loss (1-3) on 2 1/3 innings, five hits, two runs (both earned), three walks and two strikeouts.
Endicott scored both of its runs in the first as Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) knocked home Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt.) on an RBI single up the middle, while Chris Seidl (Dracut, Mass.) plated Kochiss with a single to center.
Oriola and Morris did the rest for the Gulls down the stretch to secure the split in the conference doubleheader matchup.
