New Paltz Baseball Falls to No. 13 Oswego 6-4 to Conclude Series

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Despite outhitting the Lakers 8-3 on Tuesday afternoon, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team fell to No. 13 SUNY Oswego 6-4 at Honey Field on the campus of Bard College.

With the loss, the Hawks move to 8-7 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC and will now prepare to play at SUNY Fredonia this weekend. The Lakers, meanwhile, improve to 14-5 overall, 5-1 SUNYAC.

The Hawks fell behind 3-0 after the top of the second but responded nicely with a four-run bottom of the inning to take the lead, 4-3. However, Oswego plated two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth and held on to hand New Paltz the tough conference loss.

Sophomore Justin Ganca (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore John F. Kennedy) led the Hawks' bats with a 2-for-4 outing, including a double down the left field line in the fifth.

Junior Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) enjoyed an RBI single to right in the second and sophomore Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) finished 1-for-3 with one run scored while drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second.

Sophomore righty Justin Stybel (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) earned the starting nod and despite giving up just one hit, he walked five Lakers. Stybel also struck out three and allowed three earned runs, throwing 63 pitches.

Suffering the loss was freshman John LoCurto (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) who hurled three innings and gave up what would be the game-winning run. Freshman lefty James Magnuson (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and junior righty Ryan Votypka (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) threw the final three innings in relief and combined for six strikeouts.

The Hawks' pitching staff limited Oswego to just three hits all day, coming from the 7-8-9 hitters. The first six hitters for the Lakers were a combined 0-for-19 with five strikeouts. Unfortunately, three errors in the field proved to be costly for New Paltz.
