Thomas More Defeats In-State Rival Spalding, 9-3

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team defeated in-state rival Spalding University, 9-3, today (Thursday, April 20, 2017) at Thomas More Field to complete a two-game sweep of the Golden Eagles this season.

With the win, the Saints improve to 20-6 and with the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 21-10.

Thomas More scored three in the third, four in the fourth and two in the eighth and held Spalding to one run in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth for the 9-3 victory.  The Saints staffed the game on the mound and junior Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) earned the win as he pitched a perfect fifth inning with two strike outs.

The Saints had 12 hits in the game and four players had multiple hits.  Sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-four with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted-in, junior shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was two-for-five with a home run, a run scored and two RBI, senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a run scored and a RBI and senior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was two-for-three with a run scored.

The Saints return to action on Saturday (April 22) when they open a three-game Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) series with Thiel College at Tomcat Park in Greenville, Pennsylvania.  The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single nine-inning game on Sunday (April 23) starting at 12 p.m.
