ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 1/2 Shenandoah University baseball team took over first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Saturday with a 4-1, 12-inning victory over No. 11/10 Randolph-Macon.
The extra inning win for SU (31-3, 14-3) over Macon (24-10, 12-6) was the second in as many days.
With the victory, Shenandoah is tied with Washington and Lee in the league standings. SU can clinch its fourth straight No. 1 seed in the ODAC Tournament with wins over W&L on Tuesday and Saturday over Virginia Wesleyan.
Junior Nick Goode drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle in the top of the 12thto score Abel Arocho from second base.
With one out, Arocho walked and then advanced to second on Dan Cameron's groundout to third.
R-MC elected to issue an intentional walk to Jake Loew, setting up Goode to play the hero.
Neil Dutton plated Loew with another single up the middle before Robert Marcelle drew a walk to load the bases.
Pinch hitter Nate Loman followed with a single through the left side that allowed Goode to score from third base.
In the bottom of the 12th, Matt Burns (2-0), the third pitcher of the day for the Hornets, worked around a one-out single to close the door with fly outs to center and right, respectively.
Burns got the win with 3.0 innings of relief work. He struck out three and gave up two hits.
Starter Gerard DePhillips pitched the initial 8.0 innings and allowed one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out six.
The two teams each scored single runs in the ninth to set up the second extra inning contest of the week. Dylan Stouffer plated the Hornets run with a double to right center.
Christian Cok (1-1) took the loss. He gave up two runs on three walks in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Shenandoah hosts Washington and Lee on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. ODAC contest.
