BROCKTON, Mass. - The Nichols College baseball team swept Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at Campanelli Field.
The Bison took Game 1, 9-6, before turning around and winning Game 2, 8-1.
Game 1
The Bison ran across five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the third inning to earn their 19th win of the year.
Junior Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.) had three hits while driving in two runs and scoring another to lead the Bison over the Leopards in Game 1.
The Bison saw sophomore Andrew Doll (Plantation, Fla.) drive in two while scoring two runs on a pair of hits. Sophomore Joe Assenza (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored two runs while freshman Christopher Cerniglia (Monroe, N.J.) had two RBI's.
Sophomore Danny Hayden (East Greenwich, R.I.) earned his team-leading sixth win of the season while junior Kevin Kirley (Clinton, Mass.) picked up his fifth save.
The Leopards were led by senior Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) with a three-hit day and a RBI and classmate Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.) who scored a pair of runs and went 2-for-3 on the game.
The loss went to sophomore Leo Coehlo (Marlborough, Mass.) as he came in relief of junior Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) and allowed three runs on five hits through just 0.2 innings of work.
Game 2
Junior StigErik McElhinney (Dracut, Mass.) tossed his team-leading fourth complete game of the season to lead the Bison to a sweep of the Leopards. McElhinney allowed just one run on four hits while walking one and striking out five.
Cook paced the Bison again at the plate – finishing 4-for-4 with a double, run scored, and 2-RBI single in the sixth to bring home Assenza and freshman Christian Naccari (Ossining, N.Y.).
The Leopards saw just three hits in the game from four different student-athletes – including Weninger and sophomores Anthony de la Cruz (Lynn, Mass.) and Ross Golebiewski (Lyme, Conn.) as well as senior Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.), who drove in the only run of the game for the Leopards in the seventh.
Senior Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished the with three hits – including a pair of RBI-doubles – while freshman Kyle Bouchard (Fall River, Mass.) and senior Tim Ford (Stafford Springs, Conn.) added two runs apiece.
The Bison busted the game open when they scored five runs in the sixth inning – something they did in both games.
Sophomore Mike Callagee (Emerson, N.J.) took the loss after allowing seven runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks through 5.1 innings.
All-Time Series
The Bison have swept the Leopards for the second-consecutive season and improve in the all-time series to 32-26.
