Keuka College Baseball Sweeps Gallaudet on Sunday

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Baseball team took a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference games from Gallaudet University on Sunday by the scores of 5-4 and 7-5 at Kuhl Field.

Rob LaRue (Skillman, N.Y. / Montgomery) led Keuka College (14-15, 7-5 NEAC) with five hits on the day. He also drove in three runs and scored a pair. Dave Nuzzo (Manlius, N.Y. / Fayetteville Manlius) and John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) each added four hits for the Wolves in the sweep. 

On the mound for the Green and Gold, freshman Dave Verrett (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) earned the win in Game 1, the first of his career, and the save in Game 2. It was Verrett's conference-leading fifth save of the year. The freshman has already broken both the single-season and career saves record at Keuka College. Verrett locked up the win in Game 2 for starter Ryan Lawrence (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) who levels his season record at 3-3.

Keuka College 5 vs. Gallaudet University 2 – 8 innings

The Wolves took an early lead with a Dave Nuzzo sacrifice fly in the first and an Rob LaRue RBI single in the second to lead 2-0. The Bison tied the game in the fourth, but the Wolves regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Once again, Rob LaRue had an RBI single for Keuka College, who led 3-2 after four innings. Gallaudet scored two in the top of the fifth to lead 4-3 and they carried that lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Keuka College took advantage of a leadoff error by the Bisons. On a sacrifice bunt Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) went from first to third for the Wolves. The next batter was Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y. / Tioga). The junior singled into right field to score Bowie and force extra innings. In the eighth, Rob LaRue doubled. With two outs, Bowie reached on an error and the ball kicked away from the fielder, allowing LaRue to score from second for the 5-4 victory.

Lead Wolf: Rob LaRue went a perfect 3-3 for Keuka College in the opener. The senior had two singles, a double, and a walk in his four plate appearances. LaRue drove in two runs, scored a run, and stole a base for the Wolves in the win.

Keuka College 7 vs. Gallaudet University 5

Keuka College struck first, looking to sweep the Bison. Dave Nuzzo had an RBI single for the Wolves. Two batters later, LaRue scored a run on a single as Keuka College led 2-0 after the first inning. The Bison got one back in the second and tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. The Green and Gold got back on the board with a five-run fifth inning. Nuzzo hit an RBI double, and John Rizzo scored one on a single as well. Kyle Colegrove (Elkland, Pa. / Williamson) hit an RBI single for the Wolves and the scoring was capped by Rob LaRue crossing home on a wild pitch as Keuka College took a 6-2 lead. Gallaudet got two back in the seventh, but Connor Siracusa (Auburn, N.Y. / Union Springs) answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. The Bison pushed one across in the eighth but it was not enough as Keuka College won the second game 7-5, completing the sweep.

Lead Wolf: Dave Nuzzo set a new career-high with four hits in the game against the Bison. The senior had three singles and a double in the game and drove in two runs. Nuzzo also recorded the first stolen base of his career as a part of a double steal in the first inning.

  • The Wolves have won the last six meetings with the Bison
  • Since 2005, Keuka College is 12-10-1 in extra-inning games
  • Dan Bamann (Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) tied his career-high with a pair of doubles in Game 2 against Gallaudet
  • Rob LaRue stole a pair of bases on Sunday, the 22nd and 23rd of his career. He passes Brad Martina '02 for third on the career steals list at Keuka College
  • Dakota Skinner moves past Dave Pietraszek into third place for the most hits in a single season at Keuka College with 50. The junior is just one hit shy of tying for first place on the list, which is currently held by Jon Borchert and Jake Burachalk
  • Skinner and LaRue continue to fight for the North Eastern Athletic Conference batting crown. After Sunday's games, Rob LaRue leap-frogged Dakota Skinner with a .471 batting average this season. Skinner is now second in the NEAC with a .467 average. The two are creating separation in the race as third place is posting a .422 batting average

Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves have a pair of non-conference doubleheaders during the week before their final two NEAC doubleheaders of the season next weekend. Keuka College will travel to Hilbert College on Tuesday for two games and then host Pitt.-Bradford for a pair on Wednesday at Kuhl Field.
