PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team lost to SUNY Canton, 15-3, during non-conference play at Lefty Wilson Field Tuesday evening. The Cardinals fall to 13-21 on the season, while the Kangaroos are 9-27. Tuesday's game was the team's annual Brian Mehan Be the Match game and was the Cardinals' final home game of the season.
Plattsburgh State senior Billy Rombauts (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip/Erskine) went 2-for-4, while freshman Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) singled, walked and stole a base. Junior Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East/Caldwell) walked and scored a run, while freshman Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) had a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk to cap the night with two RBIs. Sophomore starter Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) threw 1.2 innings in the loss and freshman Alec Fauvell (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) struck out two batters in two scoreless relief frames.
Canton received at least one hit from eight of its nine starters in the 21-hit attack. Senior Christian Nazario-Cruz went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and a triple and one stolen base. Junior Wilson Matos and sophomore Edward Malinoski Jr. both drove in four runs, with Malinoski hitting a solo home run. Senior Seth Douglas, junior Francesco Palumbo and sophomore Brett Hoberman each had three hits. Junior Austin Lamay yielded two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings for the win.
Following Canton junior Travis Schindler's leadoff single, Douglas doubled in the game's first run. The visitors added four runs the next inning as Malinoski doubled home a run followed later by a bases-clearing double to give the Kangaroos a 5-0 lead. Canton added a run in the fourth and then six more Kangaroos came home in the fifth to give the visitors a 12-0 edge.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Follmer singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and then scored on a wild pitch. Bryant later drew a two-out bases-clearing walk. Canton added three runs in the top of the eighth before Plattsburgh State plated the game's final run in the bottom of the eighth on Bryant's one-out sac fly to score sophomore Jordan Godfrey (Castleton, Vt./Rutland).
Plattsburgh State wraps up its season on Wednesday with a non-league doubleheader at Middlebury College, beginning at 2 p.m.
