Anchormen Clinch LEC Tournament Berth in Split at Plymouth State

Plymouth, N.H.-Rhode Island College senior left fielder Austin Barry (North Kingstown, RI) went 6-for-8, which included a pair of home runs, to go along with four runs scored and five RBI as the Anchormen split a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader at Plymouth State in the regular season finale on Thursday afternoon. RIC posted a thrilling, 6-5, extra-innings victory in the opener and Plymouth State earned a 7-6 win in the nightcap.

 

Sophomore pitcher/designated hitter Mike Webb (Pawtucket, RI) was 3-for-5 with one run scored and an RBI in the two games for RIC (17-17, 5-9 LEC). He also went six innings on the mound for the Anchormen in the first game of the twinbill.

 

Plymouth State (19-19, 4-10 LEC) was led by senior third baseman James Garnett (Newport, RI), who went 3-for-9 with two runs scored and four RBI. Senior designated hitter Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, RI) was 3-for-8 with a run scored and an RBI in the doubleheader for the Panthers.

 

In the opener, RIC jumped on the board in the top of the first when junior center fielder Brad Douglas (South Kingstown, RI) scored on a sacrifice fly from Barry. Plymouth State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run from Garnett. The Panthers then extended the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second on a solo blast from sophomore first baseman Ryan Boldwin (Manchester, NH) and went up, 4-1, in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI grounder from sophomore center fielder Ryan Richard (Berlin, NH).

 

Plymouth State plated its fifth run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by junior Cam Ruziak (Sterling, MA) for a 5-1 advantage. RIC clawed its way back in the top of the seventh when a solo home run from Barry cut the lead down to three, 5-2. An RBI single from senior catcher Nate Cahoone (Westerly, RI) made the score 5-3 and the Anchormen knotted the game at 5-5 on a two-run single from Douglas.

 

In the top of the 10th, Barry reached on a two-out double and scored what would prove to be the game-winner as junior right fielder Shaun Vigeant (Coventry, RI) hit an RBI single for the, 6-5, lead. Plymouth State went three-up and three-down in the bottom of the 10th as RIC held on the for the victory.

 

Freshman pitcher Erry Baldayac (Providence, RI) picked up the win (2-1) in relief for RIC, throwing three scoreless and hitless innings with two strikeouts for the Anchormen. Freshman Alex Larson (Brunswick, ME) took the loss for Plymouth State, allowing one run in three innings of relief.

 

The nightcap saw RIC race out to an early, 4-0, lead in the top of the third after RBI singles from Webb and Barry. The Anchormen took a 5-0 advantage in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from Barry, his second of the day.

 

Plymouth plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-1, but RIC responded in the top of the ninth as an RBI single from Barry gave the Anchormen a five-run cushion again. In the bottom of the ninth, Plymouth scored six unearned runs, which included a two-run home run from Garnett to pull out the 7-6 walk-off victory.

 

Senior Stewart Braman (Middletown, RI)  took the loss (2-1) for RIC, allowing one run on two hits in a relief performance. Junior Kyle McCarthy (Nashua, NH)  picked up the win (2-1) in relief for Plymouth State, giving up one run on two hits in one inning of work.

 

 With the win, Rhode Island College finished the regular season in a tie for sixth place in the Little East Conference. The Anchormen will see action in the 2017 Little East Conference Tournament, hosted by Southern Maine on Wednesday-Saturday, May 10-13.
