MARIETTA, Ohio — Penn State Behrend scored four runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and beat Marietta College, 6-5, Sunday (May 7) afternoon in the Pioneers' regular season finale at Don Schaly Stadium.

The Lions strung together three straight infield singles off of Pioneer closer David Stover, scoring runs on each hit, to steal the victory. Marietta tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth scoring one run and leaving two runners on base when the game ended.

Scott Oberhelman started on the mound for the Pioneers and cruised through the first six innings. The junior retired 13 straight Lions at one point as Marietta built a 4-0 lead. Penn State finally got to Oberhelman for two runs in the seventh inning.

Oberhelman finished with 7.0 innings pitched and gave up two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out six. Jacob Baker (0-3) took over to start the eighth inning and would get tagged with the loss. Baker threw 1.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout. Stover pitched one-third of an inning and gave up one run on three hits with one walk.

Marietta jumped on top in the first inning. Chris Petrucci led off the inning with a triple to center field. He later scored on a sac fly off the bat of Greg Peffley.

Petrucci picked up an RBI in the second inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Penn State defensive miscues led to runs for the Pioneers in the fifth and sixth innings giving MC a 4-0 lead. A bad throw by the Lion third baseman allowed Petrucci to reach second base safely to start the fifth inning. He moved up 90 feet on a passed ball and scored on a sac fly from Connor Golden.

Michael Barnabei led off the Pioneer sixth with a single to left. He stole second base and went to third when the throw got away from the Lion shortstop covering on the steal. Penn State's second baseman tried to get Barnabei at third but threw the ball away allowing him to score for a 4-0 Pioneer lead.

In the top of the seventh, Scott Sada doubled down the leftfield line to start the inning. David Boehme singled past a diving Petrucci moving Sada to third base.

Mason McGuire followed with another single through the left side of the infield scoring Sada. Boehme stole third and scored on a ground out by Kyle Lewis cutting the MC lead in half, 4-2.

Boehme got things rolling for the Lions in the ninth with a one-out single. McGuire reached on a fielder's choice and Boehme was put out at second base for the second out of the inning.

John Brittner pinch hit and lined a single to left. Lewis followed with a base hit to right field scoring McGuire and moving Brittner to third. Marietta went to the bullpen and brought in Stover to try and close out the game.

Stover walked Justin Foreman to load the bases. Penn State got three straight swinging bunt RBI infield singles from Zach Murray, Brandon Bergstrom and Brian Bohman to take a 6-4 lead.

Marietta refused to go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. Grant Helber reached on a one-out single. Following a line out from Seamus Kenneally, Petrucci singled to left and Golden singled to center field scoring Helber.

Penn State put Sada on the mound and he struck out the first Pioneer batter he faced to end the game and earn the save.

Justin Rohrer started on the mound for the Lions and threw 3.0 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits. Phil Myers worked 3.0 innings giving up two unearned runs on just one hit. Brandon Smail tossed 1.0 inning of shut out releief before turning the ball over to Eric Mikulan to start the eighth inning.

Mikulan (4-2) pitched 1.2 innings for the win. He was charged with one run on three hits. Sada notched his fourth save of the season with the strikeout to end the game.

Petrucci finished 3-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored. Golden drove in a pair of runs, while Barnabei scored twice.

Marietta opens defense of its Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament crown on Thursday (May 11). The Pioneers are the No. 2 seed and will face Otterbein University, seeded third, in the first round at 3:00 p.m. Top-seeded Mount Union plays No. 4 seed John Carroll University in the other first round game at Noon.
