PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – On Sunday the Maritime baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks in Skyline Conference action, as the Privateers fell by identical 7-0 scores to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles at Gregg Alfano Field.
 
Three Privateers had multi-hit afternoons as senior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and juniors Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) picked up two hits apiece. Alwan had the team's only extra-base hit of the day with a double in game one.
 
Alwan also reached base via walk, while junior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) walked twice and sophomore Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) walked once. Sophomore Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) also collected one hit apiece on the day.
 
On the hill freshman Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) got the start in the opener and pitched six innings as he allowed seven runs on 12 hits. Freshman Brady Dolan (York, Pa./Northeastern) came on and allowed just one hit and one walk in his two innings of work. Sophomore A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) got the start in game two, and went the full six innings but also allowed seven runs during the game.
 
Game 1
In the opener, Deddo reached on a one out walk in the top of the first but Maritime was unable to bring the junior around. St. Joseph's offense scored solo runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead and send the game to the top of the fourth.
 
McLaughlin opened the fourth with a single, but the Golden Eagle pitcher was able to retire the next three batters to keep the Privateers off the board.
 
After a scoreless fourth inning by Bruinsma, the Golden Eagles scored once more in the fifth before a three-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach at 7-0.
 
Dolan came on in the bottom of the seventh and got three outs, before working around a one out double in the eight to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
 
Maritime was unable to do anything with a leadoff single by Russo in the top of the ninth as St. Joseph's (LI) took game one by a 7-0 score.
 
Game 2
In the second game the sides were locked in a pitcher's duel in the early going as Ammirati worked in and out of trouble in the bottom of the first to send the game to the second frame.
 
McLaughlin reached on a leadoff single but the Privateers were unable to break through as the game remained scoreless. St. Joseph's (LI) got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on three hits. The Golden Eagles scored two more in the fifth and added another three-spot in the sixth to take another 7-0 lead.
 
Once again the Privateers got the leadoff runner on as Semler reached on an infield single to start off the seventh, but it was not enough as Maritime was held off the board to give St. Joseph's (LI) the sweep on the afternoon.
 
Maritime (14-9, 8-2 Skyline) will look to regroup on Tuesday evening, when the team hosts Lehman for a non-conference matchup with the Lightning on the Reinhart Baseball Field at 7 p.m.
 
St. Joseph's (LI) (13-7, 7-1 Skyline) will also host a CUNYAC team on Tuesday, when the Golden Eagles host the Beavers of City College of New York with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. from Gregg Alfano Field.
