OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon over the Old Westbury Panthers from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex on Long Island. In the opener, the Privateers won in convincing form with a 10-4 win, before needing a late-inning comeback to pick up the 5-4 win in game two.

Senior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) was the star of the show as he drove in seven of Maritime's 15 runs on the day, as he picked up six hits, including four doubles. Already with nine doubles on the season, McLaughlin has already set a new personal-best for two-base hits while also moving into a tie for seventh place all-time on the single-season doubles list.

In addition to McLaughlin's prowess at the plate, junior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) added to his total base number and now stands at a team-leading 40 at this early juncture, Semler scored six runs on the day including four in the opener. Junior Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) capped his weekend off with four more RBIs to give him eight on the weekend and 15 on the year.

Sophomore Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman Zach Parilla (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) also had multi-hit days, while junior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) scored three runs over both games.

On the mound, the Privateers needed just three pitchers to get through the entire 16-inning day with freshman Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) getting the start in the opener. For the second consecutive outing, the rookie pitched a complete game and struck out a season-high eight batters.

Sophomore A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) started in game two and struck out two batters over five innings to earn his first win of the season. Freshman Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) struck out one batter over the final two innings of game two and started the game-clinching double play to register his second save of the year.

Game 1
In game one the Privateers spotted Bruinsma a run as Costleigh opened the game with a single on the first pitch of the game then promptly stole second. Semler reached on a fielder's choice to move Costleigh to third before McLaughlin cashed in and picked up the RBI to put Maritime up 1-0.

Bruinsma scattered one hit over the first four innings, and picked up four strikeouts along the way to carry the game into the bottom of the fifth inning. The leadoff hitter for the Panthers reached on a triple, then came in two batters later on a groundout to tie the game at one.

Maritime's offense got back to work in the top of the sixth as Deddo got the rally started with a single, followed by a Semler single, and McLaughlin base knock to load the bases. Schiavoni walked to force home a run before freshman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) knocked in a pair with a base hit through the right side, junior Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) chased Schiavoni home with a base knock and gave Maritime a 5-1 advantage.

After Old Westbury got a second run in the bottom of the sixth, Maritime answered right back with two more in the top of the seventh. Semler was plunked by a pitch, and then raced home on a McLaughlin double. After moving up to third on a passed ball, McLaughlin touched the plate as Schiavoni came up with another clutch hit to increase the Privateer lead to 7-2.

Bruinsma yielded another run in the seventh inning but stopped the bleeding and got the third out to send the game to the eighth.

In the top of the eighth, the Privateer offense continued to power through as sophomore Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) reached on a one-out walk. Costleigh doubled to put a pair in scoring position before Deddo walked to load the bases. Two batters later, McLaughlin connected on the knockout punch as he drilled a bases-clearing double to centerfield to increase the Maritime lead to 10-3.

Old Westbury got one more run back in the bottom of the eighth, but Bruinsma slammed the door shut in the ninth to pick up his fourth win in as many career appearances with the Privateers.

Game 2
Maritime got off to just as quick a start in the second game as Semler singled with two outs. Up next was McLaughlin, who drove a double to right centerfield and put the Privateers up 1-0. In the bottom of the first, the Panthers tied the game after two singles and an error evened the contest.

Both sides remained locked at one apiece until the bottom of the third, when the Panthers took their first lead of the afternoon with two runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Old Westbury tacked on one more run as Ammirati limited the damage throughout his outing.

In the top of the sixth, Maritime's bats woke up after 10 straight Privateers were retired by Old Westbury pitching. Costleigh, Deddo and Semler reached on three straight errors to lead off the inning. McLaughlin added to his RBI total with a two-run double before Schiavoni collected an RBI on a groundout to tie the game.

Russo put the Privateers back on top with a sacrifice fly to right field as McLaughlin sprinted home from third base to put the Privateers ahead 5-4.

Graff came in for the bottom of the sixth and allowed a leadoff single before settling down to send the game to the seventh inning. The first two batters singled in the bottom of the seventh off of Graff before getting a flyout to pick up the first out. On an 0-1 pitch, Graff got the next batter to hit a comebacker and started the 1-6-3 double play to pick up the save and notch Maritime's second win of the day.
