Privateers Pound Program-Record 25 Hits in 21-6 Win over St. Joseph’s (Bklyn)

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team collected a program-record 25 hits on Sunday afternoon as the Privateers made-up a rain out with the St. Joseph's (Bklyn) Bears. The Privateers used those 25 hits to score a season-high 21 runs to run away with a 21-6 win.
 
Twelve different Privateers had at least one RBI on the day, while eight players had multi-hit afternoons. Senior Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) led the team with four RBIs as he slugged a pair of home runs and scored two runs. Junior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while fellow junior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) had three hits with one RBI. Junior Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and sophomore Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) were tied with Deddo for the team lead with three runs scored apiece, while Costleigh picked up a home run and three RBIs on the day, while Alwan drove in a pair.
 
Senior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) picked up one hit in his four at bats and also drove in his program-record 40th run of the season, while also scoring a run. Sophomore Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) had one hit and an RBI, while freshman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and junior Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) also had multi-hit afternoons with one RBI apiece. Freshman Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while senior Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) collected a single and also scored a pair of runs.
 
Freshman Zach Parilla (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) had two runs scored and was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate coming off the bench midway through the game. Sophomore John Verwoert (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) had an RBI on a bases loaded walk, while freshman Matt Lobello (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Freshman Tommy Buckman (McLean, Va./McLean) and Dan Sinisi (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) also saw time, while fellow rookie Matt Tirado (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) made his collegiate debut as a late-inning defensive substitution.
 
On the hill freshman Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) got the start and went four innings as he picked up his fifth win of the season. Sophomore Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) pitched the fifth and sixth innings, while sophomore Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) threw the seventh inning to cap off the win for the Privateers.
 
In the top of the first inning Maritime sent 13 batters up to the plate, with Costleigh and Deddo leading off with walks on four pitches each. Semler singled to load the bases before McLaughlin singled to make the score 1-0. Russo, Shiavoni, Alwan and Diaz all followed with run-scoring singles. Costleigh and Deddo each singled ahead of Semler's run-scoring single to cap the first inning off with an eight spot.
 
With a big lead on the scoreboard Paghidas went to work and retired the side in order in the first inning. The right-hander allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the second but got a double play behind him to keep the Bears in check.
 
Stewart led off the top of the third with a solo home run to increase Maritime's lead to 9-0. Paghidas got out of the bottom of the third again with the help from his defense as the Privateers turned a second double play in as many innings.
 
In the top of the fourth Schiavoni led off with a double before Alwan singled to put the first two runners on base. Diaz singled to score Schiavoni and bring up Stewart, who sent his second home run in as many innings over the right field fence. Two batters later Deddo sent a solo home run over the fence to cap off the five-run inning and give Maritime a 14-0 lead.
 
The bottom of the fourth saw the first three batters reach for the Bears, which resulted in three runs scoring for St. Joseph's (Bklyn) as the Bears trimmed the deficit to 11 heading into the fifth inning.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Buckshaw came on in relief of Paghidas and got the first two batters out on just three pitches. The next batter walked and moved up to second on a passed ball, before Buckshaw got a groundout to end the threat.
 
Maritime put up another crooked number in the top of the sixth as DiLeo led off with a base hit, followed by a single off the bat of Parilla. Costleigh then launched his third home run of the season to add another three runs for the Privateers. Deddo followed with his second home run of the day on a 2-0 pitch as he gave the Privateers an 18-3 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth St. Joseph's (Bklyn) got two runs back on a groundout and a single after the first two batters reached in the frame. The top of the seventh saw the Privateers get three more runs right back as Alwan, DiLeo and Parilla reached to load the bases. Scerra reached on an infield single to pick up an RBI, before Verwoert pinch hit and walked in a run on a 3-1 pitch. Lobello added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to make the score 21-5.
 
St. Joseph's (Bklyn) scored the final run of the game off of Poliwoda, but the sophomore settled down after the leadoff home run and retired three of the last four batters to close out the game for the Privateers.
 
Maritime (21-11, 13-3 Skyline) can clinch the two seed on Monday afternoon as the regular season will come to a close as the Privateers play host to Yeshiva at 12 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
 
St. Joseph's (Bklyn) (14-19, 9-9 Skyline) needed a win against the Privateers on Sunday to keep its season alive, but fell in their final two conference games to close out the season and miss the conference postseason by one game.
