ADRIAN, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team defeated Adrian 4-2 in a must-win game for the Hornets to force a final game for the championship in the MIAA Tournament.
Both teams now have one loss in the tournament and will play the deciding game beginning at 3:15 p.m. to determine a champion and the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Championships.
Kalamazoo loaded the bases in the second but was unable to push a run across. Adrian responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take the early lead.
Kalamazoo was able to score a run in the third and another in the fourth to even the score at 2-2.
The score remained tied until the eighth inning when Mitch VanKoevering singled with two outs and then scored on a double by Alex Fultz. Kalamazoo made it a 4-2 game in the top of the ninth when Jack Clark drove home Jordan Wiley with a sacrifice fly.
Ryan Orr came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and got three groundouts to end the game and earn his third save of the season.
Jacob Gilhaus pitched six innings before giving way to Joe Giacalone who pitched the seventh and was credited with the win. Steve Simmons pitched a scoreless eighth before Orr closed out the ninth. Kalamazoo did not allow a hit over the final three innings.
Jordan Wiley and Mitch VanKoevering each finished with two hits while VanKoevering also walked twice.
