Senior Cory Poplawski (Syracuse, N.Y.) tossed a complete-game four hit shutout to lead Salve Regina to a 5-0 victory over Arcadia in an elimination game at the 2017 NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional at Whitehouse Field.
With the victory, the Seahawks (36-11) advance to face Babson later this evening in an elimination game at Whitehouse Field. The Beavers and the Seahawks met on Thursday morning in the first game of the regional with the Beavers claiming a 14-3 victory. Arcadia sees their season come to a close at 33-12.
Poplawski went the distance for the Seahawks allowing just four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Poplawski carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before it was broken up by senior Jordan Draude (Lancaster, Pa.) who legged out an infield single to deep short.
The Seahawks were led offensively by junior John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while sophomore Brody Santilli (Lincoln, R.I.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) chipped in with a pair of hits.
The Seahawks got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Santilli singled to center and was sacrificed over to second base, setting the table for an RBI double to left by Militano.
The run would be the only one Poplawski would need to secure the victory, but the Seahawks added three runs in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) delivered a sacrifice fly to left and sophomore Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Salve added one more in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by senior Hunter Sleeper (Arlington, Mass.).
Freshman Jeremy Sabathne (Elizabethtown, Pa.) took the loss for the Knights going five and a third allowing one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
