Conway, Ark., Feb. 18, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon in Conway, Ark. falling 14-4 to No. 22 University of Texas-Dallas and 3-2 to Hendrix College in extra innings at the Warriors Field.
WashU totaled 15 hits combined in the back-to-back games, including 10 against Hendrix. Sophomore John Brinkman and freshman Johnny LaMantia contributed runs batted in during both contests while sophomore Matt Ashbaugh threw five innings of one-run baseball in his first collegiate start.
Game 1: No. 22 Texas Dallas 14 – WashU 4 BOX
The Bears struck first on sophomore Brian Schutter's RBI double that scored sophomore AJ Dunham who reached on an error in the second. Multiple errors in the bottom half of the inning gave the Comets a 3-1 lead.
WashU held Texas-Dallas off the scoreboard for the next three innings but the Comets put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth inning.
Freshman Jack DeSalvo, Brinkman and LaMantia each knocked in a run during the Bears three run eighth inning but Texas-Dallas scored four runs in the bottom half to win the game on a shortened run rule limit.
Game 2: Hendrix 3 – WashU 2 BOX
Once again, WashU scored the first run of the game on a run scoring double by LaMantia. Sophomore Thomas Gardner scored after single to center.
The Warriors evened the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a home run.
Brinkman knotted the game at 2-2 when his double pated sophomore John Ostrander who reached on a leadoff bunt single. The score remained true until the bottom of the 10th inning on a two-out walk-off single.
